Better hard-use folder, Militarty or Manix 2 XL?
on: October 15, 2015, 11:47:19 AM
The Manix is said to have a stronger lock but the blade thickness is .125 and the Military/Para2 blades are .145 which is pretty stout.

Which is the better hard-use knife?

Blade thickness does not really feature, the Manix is a lot broader and any thickness advantage is wiped out by this.

I have both and would say the Manix 2 XL feels like it will stand up to more than the Liner Lock on the military.
They are both folders and should not be pressed into the role of a fixed blade.

I don't understand. I would have thought the broader blade of lesser thickness would be a weak point because of increased shear area. Could you say more about this, please?

Agreed, yet in a situation where it is not possible or feasible to carry a fixed blade one looks for the most robust folder given the constraints.

Another thing to take into account is the distal taper on the blade as it approaches the point. While the blade on the Manix 2XL is thinner at it's widest, it is thicker than the Military at it's thinnest (the tip). Depending on what you intend to call 'hard use', this will be an important distinction.

Owning both, I'd say Manix 2XL would be more durable, but this is just my opinion from carrying and using them. I don't 'hard use' my folders. I prefer the Military for regular carry as it rides better in the pocket due to size/build and clip position.

YMMV.

Yeah, I'm not happy about the Manix carry config. I prefer RH/TD overwhelmingly and the only TU folder I have is the UKPK. So far I haven't sheared off any pockets so it's lulling me into a false sense of security.

Thanks for your comments, they are helpful.

I'm with Slinger. Depends on your definition of hard use.

My best guess is that Manix 2 XL would fare better in many cases since it has a thicker tip. If you're only looking for lock strength then outside of the obvious snarky comment (get a fixed blade), you should feel safe with Military's liner lock

I was trying to decide between the Military and the PM2 but looking over the catalog the Manix 2 XL looked pretty good. Because of the price advantage and you guys' comments I'm leaning toward the Manix at this point. Thanks for all the info.

Without any explanation I very much dislike everything about the Manix so it's a easy choice for me.

Hard use to me is batoning wood and hard cutting with full arm strength.
All the force on one plane, not left to right like a prybar.

The Manix also has full length steel liners while the Military has shorter ones.
The pivot size of the liner lock is a little bigger but the Axis type is more forgiving in the up down plane the force is on.

I think if you really want a hard use folder you should take a look at cold steel, overall they are not that good as an miltary 2 but they sure win on the hard use part.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am probably going to get the Manix, just need to find room in the budget.
