AHH!!!!

About a month, maybe six weeks ago, a PRC court actually ruled in favor of an itellectual property owner- Lego. Lupin finally got spanked for their blatent rip off lines- all they did was change the red Lego logo with their red, square Lupin logo and maybe change a few names but they were stealing not only set design but even box art. Sadly, they are pretty good quality, on par with MegaBlox (maybe better) and actually do have a decent line of original material.

And most of the clone parts are just junk, so they're probably going to be getting spanked to.

This should be good news. Right?

Yes and no. Part of the no is that Lego is just plain expensive. So if everyone is afraid the PRC is going to over-enforce, I see a real danger in Lego becoming something where there is no real option for much of the world's population. It's like why is there value in a QUALITY knockoff of a SAK or a Leatherman or Gerber (or in a current production SOG)? Because while premium brands are better, often times they aren't better enough for a lot of people's budgets.

There are a lot of custom, Lego-compatible niche builders out there. Most of these outfits mold in China, I can only think of one, maybe two, that do their molding in whole or at least large part in the US or Canada.

I spend way too much money at Brick Warriors, for example, so I can equipp my minifigs with arms and armour as I use them for gaming props. And Brick Warriors is going strong (I hope).

Brick Arms appears to be going strong, to, and if you ignore the price if you want a M41A pulse rifle or E11s or FALs, they're the place to go. But they don't direct sell. But BA's biggest distributor is shutting down their website as of tonight- that was not the case a week ago. GI Brick is suddenly shutting down. Order placed last night, and you could see stuff going out of inventory as I refreshed.

Brick Forge has been running a 60% liquidation for a month, and hasn't been restocking since this summer.

Punkpopmunky who mostly sells recolors of other people's work is liquidating inventory.

Brickforces.com (no relation to my minifigs) is running a 30% sale that I noticed the day of the court ruling. Not even direct knockoffs, just compatible- who they are stealing from is mostly 20th Century Fox and Toho, they have nice minifigs of the Predator, Aliens and Godzilla. Their ET is pure nightmare fuel.

Affordable Building Blocks is running large sales, which they normally do leading up to christmas but are still running.I haven't done business with them, so I don't know they are selling knock offs, but their large quantity/low price Stormtrooper boxes make me go "hmmmm". (I MIGHT do business, because they are the only people selling Scouttroopers for less than five bucks a pop, and I want to paint the armour black for Storm Commandos ala WEG)

I think for a lot of the world, this hobby is about to get even more expensive.
