Your Special Tools
on: October 24, 2015, 02:14:49 AM
In light of all the snobbery and bashing lately I felt it necessary to start a thread for our beloved tools that are not the greatest, unpopular, and yet we keep them for our own pleasure. I will start with mine.

First the CRKT Zilla tool. Its been in my collection since the beginning and although I don't use it much it is still one of my favorites.

Then there is the Sog Powerduo. Again it has its shortcomings but I really like using the blade and it is one of the few full size tools with a toothpick and tweezer.

Last but not least. The Buck Xtract 732. Bare bones basic mt, a little chunky, but it has some of the best scissors. Plus it's blue

Those are some of mine. What is dear to your multitool heart?

Two tools that I took a shine to that didn't get much love here are the Balance and the MP700. I seem to have a more favourable outlook than most on the Bear Grylls Strata too. I'm one of not many fans of the X-Tract Fin (not sure if that's the same as yours without cross checking).

The Octane would be another actually, and there's only a handful of us that rate them higher than the Skeletool. The Paladin PT510 chassis was great, and it's a shame that's been discoed. The gear covers made a significant difference. Many people think the Rebar is an improvement on the "zytel line", but I prefer the Fuse chassis. I suppose the Dime ought to get a mention here too.

I don't want to sound too "pro Gerber", because I judge the tool not the brand, and there have been plenty of Gerbers that haven't worked out for me too.

The stars of the show for me now though are my mods. Not because there's any great craftsmanship or anything, but because I made them better for me than what was commercially available

I always wanted to try an octane and yes the 732 is the same as the fin model. What do you like about the octane? I'll have to look up the mp700

Skeletool is one of such tool for me. I didn't like it at first but after owning it for a couple months I finally fall in love with it. So I figure one might take a little time to warm up to Skeletool, so I hosted a 31 days challenge last year to bring it on the map. It was very successful, we had fun, converted some non believers any no one died.

Skeletool. Even though it hasn't been together in months. It was my first Leatherman I purchased.

And it got me hooked on this site.

Old shot;

I don't own this tool anymore but it's still special.

Stew has it now. I know it's in some of the safest hands it could ever be in.

I'm so glad it went on to such a great home. Stew is an absolutely incredible guy and I sure hope he is doing alright!

I also have a thing for my PLSK, amazing how much utility it packs in such small package, way better than any Alox IMO.

I'm in with the Skeletool as well.  When I first saw I had no desire to own one.  But I've come around, and the CX gets carried more than any of my other LMs.

I bought an Xtract for my son for his first knife. I think I like it more than he does; everything is one-handed! Scissors, screwdriver, the whole schmeer.

That's a solid SAK wannabe.  :tu:

The xtraxt really is a good tool for what it cost. And it comes with a very nice sheath. I love the diversity. It is what makes this place great. @50ft what modded tools do you have?

Not a tool, but despite owning a couple of expensive Flashlights (Olight, Fenix and Led Lenser) my EDC light is a no-brand cheapo :D

No pics at the moment(my phone is gone) but all of my SOGs. Seems to be a well disliked brand and have had a few peeps call my tools junk, publicly or though PMs.

It may sound funny, but when I first get a tool I can keep it or give it away on the spot and I wouldn't miss it, but once I use the tool I start to have an emotional attachment to the tool and it becomes my tool.  Once I consider it my tool I can't get rid of it.  My first multi tool was a Gerber MP that I got around 1994ish.  It bit me badly, as they do, but like a naughty puppy I loved it anyway.  Still here, and I still take it out and use it on occasion.  I love the bit kit in the compartment that unsnaps from the back of the pouch.

For me its rather the other way round. I can pick up a tool and immediately like it, but then over time that love is lost and I humbly return to my Spirit :D

An occasional dalliance is understandable and forgivable.  I owned several tools before I bought my Spirit and the ones I kept were the good ones, because I didn't bother to keep any that didn't work or were so poorly constructed that they were unusable.  Since they are all good, working tools I sometimes choose one for a specific task or because it is appropriate for what I'm doing that day.  I really like the Spirit though, and I even like the butter knife blade.  I think the Spirit has a sort of elegance about it that other multi tools lack and it is my favorite EDC.  I even like it better than the Wave.

Love the Paratool. Scattergun13(Stew) hooked me up with one and i love. Small, light weight and is about the size of a PST when open and about the size of a SAK when closed. Great pliers, tools are good and just plain cool.
models i like, the Paratool as i stated above, Tthe Powerlock and hands down IMO the best folder ever made, the SOG Vulcan. Chris Reeves quality type folder. Very smooth, bank vault lock up and holds and edge like crazy.
Harassment, kinda and doesn't happen all the time. Some of the people have managed to get themselves banned and others are still here. And its not just been my tools that got bashed. I have been treated badly a few times, but no big deal. Sadly, as much as i hate to say it, here lately, I have been grasping at straws to stay here. Hopefully things will go back to normal. So much hate and disrespect lately.

The spirit is the best imo. I feel the same way about my tools. Once I've used them I get attached. But few tools have made their way back home. I don't think I'll ever get another wave. I've had four of them and can't get past the unreasonably tight plier head. I've also had 3 gerber fliks and I am tempted to get another but I would have to get a great price on it.

Well I'm glad your still around. If all the good people left what would happen to this place? The vulcan is one badsmurf knife. That is on my Christmas list. If I get a chance I'll have to pick up a paratool one day to get a feel in hand

I've recently acquired a new stainless MP600 and have really taken to it. It's the perfect tool for me and feels great in hand. I love the splay of the pliers, and the solid (not replaceable) wire-cutters. I EDC the bit kit with custom bits to provide additional functionality but I also love the onboard drivers, especially the Phillips.

The best part of this tool is its wharncliff blade which I've used a lot and keeps a great edge. While I've not yet had occasion to use the file, I prefer it to a saw so that's cool too.

What a great tool, and lots of flicky fun. :2tu:

I agree on all counts with the exception of the Warncliff blade. I truly despise it on the MP400 and MP600. Why they ever switched (downgraded) blade styles is beyond me.

At the moment....

The Fuse-ilier: a knifeless orange Fuse with BO tools, not standard "Knifeless Fuse" set up though.

The Neutered Octane: an Octane with blade removed, and Phillips replaced with one from an MP700

The MP426: A MP400 with corkscrew which has had the knife replaced with a file

The TurboDiesel: A BO Diesel which has had the knife and lanyard loop replaced with a blade exchanger

The DEsTroyer: A Gerber DET which had the heads switched out for the shears off a Paul Chen Multitasker. This is currently out of commission as I have robbed some parts from it, but hope to have it back in circulation soon

I've had a few SOG's come through the rotation.  I've not kept any because the setups just weren't right for my needs, but I can't say I had any negative impressions of the quality, or functionality, of the tools.  I don't know know much about the history of the brand, but it appears their newer stuff is pretty good quality as far as I am concerned.
