Question on sending tool to LM for warranty work
on: November 10, 2016, 06:37:50 AM
It has been a long time since I have sent a tool back for repair.  Do they usually email you to let you know what's going on?

How long is turn around time normally?

I sent in a wave late last February or early March and got it back in less than two weeks.

I have had similar turn around time but never any communication from them in any form :tu: In fact even when I email them I rarely get a response from them  I pretty much have given up from getting anything out of them but the Warranty department usually does a fine job

I emailed them and the gal responded that my OHT was being repaired and that I should have it back in 8 to 10 business days.

Got an email tonight, tracking number from LTG to me.  I'm assuming that is Leatherman Tool Group...I'd love to have my OHT back before Thanksgiving!

I have to admit, I'm surprised they didn't send a new tool.  They simply repaired my tool.  The PE blade was damaged by the previous owner, and had been worked on.  It's fine, but also obvious that it has been reshaped a bit by the previous owner.

Don't get me wrong, I am perfectly fine with them only repairing my tool, actually I am glad. It's broke in and a joy to use.  It's just that it seems they replace tools alot.

From wikipedia  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leatherman
Quote
Almost ten percent of the manufacturing facility area is concerned with the repairing and rebuilding of any tool that needs it, either domestically, or sent from distributors from around the world. Their system is to replace and return any tool sent in with an equivalent item, reducing the time the owner is without the tool, unless they request the same physical tool due to sentimental reasons.

Yeah, I did not mark it as sentimental. I didn't really care either way. New tool meant I got a new blade with factory edge, my tool back meant I got MY tool that was broken in and I was used to.

Again, NOT complaining!!!  Just kind of surprised.

I would have no doubt that somewhere in the repair department they have a chart of whether it is better to replace or repair a tool based on the level of damage and the costs associated with it.  For example, it may be worth replacing a part on the OHT because it's one screw and one piece, while it may not be on the Charge or Rebar because undoing one screw loosens many pieces that then have to be lined up again.

I can't imagine any company nowadays not having something set up telling them which action to take based on what is financially most beneficial.

After carrying the ST300 EOD the last few days, I am second guessing the OHT as my favorite.  I really like the one handed operation, but the tools, and knives, are just all so short.  Especially compared to the ST300...
