I know several stupid people that work for a living, but that doesn't mean they're not stupid. I've seen stupid people do stupid things to get a job done, and whilst they got away with it that time, it doesn't mean what they did wasn't stupid. I have been that stupid person a few times too, and I to am not exempt. Stupid is stupid whether it works or not, it's just more impressive when it works than taking the wise approach  :D

Something to remember in an emergency, but not something you'd want to use otherwise.

Why do we still have steering wheels?  Surely, they should have been replaced with joysticks by now..

I still think it is more of a tradition, rather than being unable to produce a good joystick, with longer movement and feedback, clearing all that space in front of the driver (especially if the joystick goes on the side).

Here is the conclusions paragraph from that:

"The issue comes down to precision and feedback. For one, a wheel with several turns from lock to lock allows for much more accurate control than a stick with an inch or two of travel from side to side. For aircraft, that isn’t much of a problem, but aircraft don’t have to parallel park, squeeze through busy city streets, or cruise along in the middle lane of a motorway with traffic on either side. Given the need for precision, the value of feedback as part of a pleasant driving experience can’t be overstated. It's much easier to channel feedback from the front tires to a steering wheel for the same reasons the wheel is more precise than a joystick. So even if we didn’t have to account for an entire installed user base that's used to a steering wheel and pedals, the chances of seeing a different solution on our roads seems extremely remote due to the current setup's accuracy advantages. (Like the wheel, pedals are in no danger of disappearing any time soon even if the cars modified for paraplegic drivers have shown it’s quite possible to drive without using one’s feet"

Once rode in an old Model T Ford. Instead of a gas pedal, it has a throttle on the steering column. And reverse gear was a pedal on the floor. Also a lot of other differences from current cars.

Cars are not regulated as to the way they are setup for the most part.  In the early 1900's many different cars had totally different ways of controlling them.  Over the years though the pedals, shifter and steering wheel evolved into what they are now based on driver feedback and trial and error.

Mind you, as technology advances I've found it interesting to see the changes that have come along with it, as ideas abandoned years ago are successfully reintroduced.  The one that I always think of first is the push button transmission that (I think) Ford introduced in the 50's, but failed miserably.  Now every other manufacturer had push buttons or dials instead of a shifter.

Also the cylinder cutout.  Cadillac tried it in the 70's, where the engine would stop feeding for of the eight cylinders when not needed to increase fuel economy while still keeping the large engine customers wanted in a Cadillac.  It also failed miserably.  Nowa days both GMC and Dodge are both using big engines that stop feeding certain cylinders when the power isn't needed, and my boss's Dodge Ram pickup with a Hemi gets better fuel mileage on the highway than my 3.6L V6 Jeep does.

I would..... but the Hemi swap kit is somewhere around $10k.

Seems like a lot of money to spend just to save a few bucks on gas.

Your not just saving money on gas, your getting a Hemi!  :D

I personally would not spend 10K on the swap though.

I don't get the "Hemi" thing

Why not swap to a Cummins? Enough torque to spin the tires off the axles and probably around 18mpg

You are absolutely right.

However, if you were about 20 years older you'd get the Hemi thing.  It's a pointless muscle car era thing.

Still, I would take a diesel Jeep if it were an option.

I still somewhat get it, Hemi's were and still are a big thing. (Even though most engines these days follow the same design)

We helped build a 426 Hemi with an RV Cam and for a Monte Carlo. It's still not in the car, but she sure is pretty :D I'll dig up pictures one of these days
