Swiza D02
on: November 18, 2015, 07:14:19 PM
I recently got myself a Swiza D02 and here are some pics and thoughts on it:

(The knife was clean when I got it, I just forgot to take a pic of it before using it)

The D02 has very few tools: a locking knife, an awl, a philips driver and tweezers.

I have been carrying it for a few days now, and a few pros's and cons has revealed them selves:

Blade:
The blade is easy to open and close and the lock works well. It has a somewhat strange angle to the handle, wich took a little time to get used to. The blade is quite thin and does flex a little from side to side under pressure, but there is no bladeplay to speak of. As a result of the thin blade, it slices very well through cardboard and the like, despite not beeing razor sharp out of the box. (I is sharp, just not super razor sharp)
I have wittled a little with it, and it handles that well.
The hole is a gunk magnet though, so its not ideal for food prep and other clean work.
The blade is easy to open with gloves.

The awl:
The awl is a bit strange. Its very short and widens fast with a big flap to open it.  As a result of this it makes quite large holes. If the hole in the awl is intended for sewing, it will be pointless as the hole will be huge by the point the hole passes through.

It does however work well as a second small blade for cutting tape and paper.
The awl can be opened with gloves.

The phillips driver:
I have only tried it on small and medium sized screws, wich worked ok.  Can be opened with gloves.

The tweezers: I havent reeally needed them, but they seem ok. Can not be opened with gloves on.

Ergonomics:
The ergonomics of the D02 feels quite good. The scales are nice and grippy thanks to the rubber overmould. Using the knife is very comfortable, no protruding tools that cause discomfort.

Over all:
That I can open the main tools with gloves on is a big plus for this tool, at least for me in the winter, wich is why Ill continue to EDC it for while longer.

The awl is a bit of a let down. There is plenty of space to make it longer and thinner, so I dont get why its so short and wide.

Ergonomics is good.

Its a decent tool if you can manage with so few tools.

Ill post more thoughts on it after some more use.

Well done....informative.  Looks like Swiza is really onto something for a Gen1 offering.

How do you like the back layer Phillips?

Im not a huge fan of backlayer philips,  but it worked ok for opening battery hatches on my sons toys, and it also opened and tightened the philips screws in my bathroom door (wich is where I try all new tools phillips drivers)
Im planning on trying to screw in a phillips screw in a wall with it later, if it handels that, then it is quite good.

Thanks for this very good review.   :salute:
In a youtube review it was mentioned, that the blade tip is coming out
the handle through the opening/closing of the backside Phillips.
Can you confirm this at your SWIZA?

Thanks and regards.

I just checked and it does lift the blade at half open.

Hello Grathr,

thanks. That's bad
So I stay with my D04. There's only a little motion in the can opener
when you open/close the backside Phillips.

I honestly dont see the big problem. It only lifts for a split second when opening. I tried to see if I could cut my self on it when the phillips is half open, and I could not.
Is there something Im not seeing?

For me this is a no go.
If I use the knife of my own or borrow it to someone
I expect that the tools can be opend or closed without
the danger of cutting on a suddenly exposed tip or
cutting edge.
If I open a car door I neither expect that the wiper hit me  :D ;)

I'll happily agree to disagree here, because I'm really straining to see a reasonable (to me :) ) way of handling the knife where that lifting of the blade when opening the backside tool becomes a problem.

Id say that there is a much bigger chance of closing the blade on your fingers while deenganging the lock than getting hurt by the blade doing a tiny jump when opening the phillips.
In my opinion, if the person is so clumsy that he/she manages to cut him/her self while opening the phillips, I would not give that person a knife at all...

I don't see it as a problem either but rather as a proof of sloppy design. Deploying the corkscrew on my Vics also makes the blade move upwards but only infinitesimally and, unlike the SWIZA, the blade's tip practically doesn't get exposed.

True, true... whoever said the Swiza is an unoriginal redesign?
This is pure innovation... never heard of an assisted opening flipper disguised as a Philips screwdriver before :tu:

Everybody handles tools differently, and even though I would be highly unlikely to catch myself or my clothing (or anything else) on that briefly exposed blade tip (or for it to nip anything when closing again), I think it would still find it a little irksome. It does strike me as something I would find sloppy in design.

Also, is it me, or does that Phillips look a little too pointy?

So far, I can't say I'm particularly enamoured with what I'm seeing here. It doesn't ruffle the feathers like another recently released tool does (mentioning no names  :P), but I'm not drawn to try one out either. I hope they get enough of a foot hold to offer something different in future, but I'm quite content to let this one pass me by. There just doesn't seem to be any reason to carry this knife/tool instead of something else

As I implied in another thread, I think the Swiza Dxx is a pretty good implementation of a design which is simply not for me. For now, I'll stick to conservative, if-it-aint-broken-dont-fix-it Vic.

I don't own one, but from what I see I believe it's not a bad deal for a first model run Gen1 tool from a new company.  That little bit of blade jump isn't going to be a problem for anybody carrying this knife.  It's just a deficiency they can improve on with Gen2
