DUNGEON CRAWLER! Theo's December Surge Challenge Thread
on: December 01, 2015, 07:40:08 AM
Here we go.

Day one and the Dungeon Crawler has already proved a challenge, but not for the reasons you might expect. Normally I EDC this Surge as well as a Crunch. I came across a task at work which I normally use my Crunch for, but my Crunch was sitting at home dreaming crunchy dreams.

The hand buffer you see in the pictures needed its mop changed, but the bolt that holds the mop in place becomes tighter as the tool is used, so once a mop is dead, the bolt is in a deadly choke hold. While the Surge's bolt grip channel is large enough to go around the plastic head of the bolt, the handles end up splayed too far out to get any kind of proper grip on the tool.

So I trekked over to the toolbox for a pair of vice grips but, lo and behold, they weren't in there, which is why in the second picture you can see me overkilling like a dweeb, using a pipe wrench to undo the little bolt.

Day two.

First thing at work today I had to get my hands on an extension cord, but they're all disappearing because we've been having renovations and getting a whole lot more equipment that needs to be set up. This process seems to eat extension cords and other such things ravenously.

The only place I could think of that had a spare extension cord was the room where we use the hand buffer that featured in day one. Everything in this room is coated in a not-so-thin layer of the fibres from the mops on the buffer. Worse yet, the extension cord I was going for was hanging from the ceiling, where the gunk never gets vacuumed up. I had to use the Dungeon Crawler to break some cable ties holding the extension cord up there. With the disturbed dust, everything got filthy real fast. Picture number three shows just how dirty my uniform got.

Then I used the Dungeon Crawler to cut the fibre tape I used to keep the extension cord with the tool I needed it for, as seen in picture number four.

The rest of the day was spent learning how to use our flashy new CNC milling machine, so the Surge didn't get used again.

Day three.

In the first picture I'm using the Dungeon Crawler to pull out a stuck pin in a vice in a milling machine. The pin adjusts the increments of the vice jaws.

In the second picture I've used the Surge's awl to turn my friend's recycled Red Bull bottle into a drippy bottle, by putting a pinhole in the lid, so I can apply kerosene (cutting lubrication) to the metal I'm milling.

Picture number three is a bonus rockclimbing picture from this afternoon.

Day four.

I didn't get to do anything exciting with the Dungeon Crawler at work today. Today's picture is just of me using the large screwdriver to pry open the can of generic metal polish we use on the rollers of one of our rolling mills.

I also opened a bottle with it yesterday, despite its distinct lack of a bottle opener, which has been swapped out for other tools.

Day five.

Saturday.

Tournament and feast today. Oh yeah, by the way, I'm a Medieval reenactor. Carrying the Dungeon Crawler is nothing to me because I'm used to wearing twenty kilograms of armour and then fighting in it. Sometimes in 30+ degree (Celcius, for all you Yanks) weather.

Tomorrow I'll be going to see the V8 Supercars with my brother and I won't be able to take the Surge in with me, so I'll probably have a boring token picture tomorrow.

Yeah, Sydney 500, I've been twice before. I live close enough that I can hear the cars racing in the distance with my window open. I quite like looking at all the vintage muscle cars, maybe more than actually watching the race.

At the feast tonight, I was asked to fix a piece of jewellery for someone (I have a Bachelor of Visual Arts with Honours, Majoring in Jewellery Design). It was a necklace with a link that had come undone, because they were all held together with incredibly fine, un soldered jump rings. The Dungeon Crawler was the only tool I had with me, it really wasn't the right tool for the job, the pliers were far too large and the work was so fine that tweezers would have been more appropriate, but I was able to get it wearable again for her. No picture, unfortunately.

Dungeon Crawler isn't coming to the Supercars with me today, but here's a picture of it with the shirt I'm going to wear.

Day seven.

Monday.

No picture opportunities at work today, so here's another swordfighting picture. Monday night is when we practice.

So, we have seen the defense but we want to see the offense too... pictures of your SWORD(S) please :pok:

Do you do theatrical combat, real combat or both?

P.S.: Just to clarify we also want to see the rest of your armor ;)
P.P.S.: And blood >:D

I fight in a group called the SCA, it's the biggest reenactment group, with branches all over the world. Our weapons are nothing exciting to look at because they're made of wood, but that means we can fight at full speed and full force. It's real combat, no choreography.

Here are some photos of me in kit.

Day eight.

I was using our new CNC milling machine for most of the day at work today. Accordingly, here are some pictures of the Dungeon Crawler with the machine.

Day nine.

Again, I spent most of the day putting mileage on the new CNC milling machine, but I got an opportunity to whip out the Dungeon Crawler when I had to cut a piece of silver to a non standard size. I used the awl like a scribe to rule a line before cutting it on the guillotine.

Day ten.

Today I assembled several new lockers at work. Dungeon Crawler's S35VN blade from Texas Tool Crafters pwned the packing straps and tape. You can get the S35VN wickedly sharp and it stays sharp.

I didn't use the Phillips screwdriver for all the screws, just the one in the picture, I got a real Phillips for the rest (I swapped the Phillips in for the bit driver. Thanks to Breezy12 who traded me this and the medium flat driver that replaces the bottle opener, also helped me get my hands on the Surge before the new model was available in Australia, good stuff mate).

Nothing exciting today, just using the Dungeon Crawler to open up an empty soap dispenser so I could refill it.

Day 12

My friend is getting married today!

Waistband carrying my Dungeon Crawler with my suit pants. I tried pocket carrying first, but it looked too lumpy. I get away with pocket carrying my Wave in suit pants, but not the Surge, by the looks of things.

The Surge, however, is not the biggest blade I'm carrying. The groom wanted us all to bring real swords (a great many of the guests are reenactors), so we can make an arch of swords for the couple to walk through at the end of the ceremony. I've got mine.

I emailed them asking if they were going to do a supersteel blade for the Surge (because it's not listed on the site), and they replied saying they have S35VN for the Surge as a special order item. Naturally, I ordered one immediately.
