Alox Rambler Takes A Win
on: December 04, 2015, 02:01:06 PM
I recently had to part with my Alox Rambler because of dropped pants December.

Mrs z quickly added it to her key ring and that was that.

Tonight, while at a work dinner, someone with a small Spyderco spotted the Rambler and challenged her to a cutting competition.

They held up a piece of receipt paper and the Rambler sliced through it.

Then she held up the receipt paper and the small Spyderco could only manage a tear.

After much laughter they all agreed how excellent the Rambler was and how useful the other tools would be.

My chances for getting that SAK back are not looking good.

Hate to say it, but that one is gone man. Gonna have to spring for another one.

As a hardcore fan of Victorinox with over 120 saks, 3 saks currently on me and another 3-4 various SwissGear branded items on me I can safely say... this guy had no idea how to sharpen his Spyderco  :D

Honestly, I love saks but I don't think they could hold a candle to a proper folder... steel is far worse and takes less of an edge, the profile is marginally less suitable, the default sharpening angle is far more obtuse and the blade shape is a spearpoint compared to leafshaped.

I have 3 Spydies and unless they can cut a hair lengthwise I consider them to be blunt... Vics are supposed to be blunter as they are more flexible, the steel is softer and they are designed to do other stuff as well. Plus the average sak user should be less sharpener-proficient than the one of a tacticcy-Spydie...

Naturally, harder steel keeps an edge much longer but it is also more difficult to sharpen... but it is not a secret that the 58mm BLADE ROCKS

Yup! That's a gonner!

Another win for Victorinox! Spydies can obviously compete if sharpened properly, but if you lose the edge for any reason while away from your elaborate sharpening tackle, it'll be the Victorinox not the Spydie that you'll be able to sharpen up to a usable edge on whatever happens to be lying around.

Ease of sharpening > edge retention

... and of course there's all those other wonderful functions too. There's a reason I haven't been sucked into the Spydie wormhole, and that's because I believe I can spend my money better elsewhere

I will take edge retention everytime. But that is me. I hate it when blades dull out fast. Its more time sharping when I could be cutting. Also, is it just me, but everybody keeps saying it takes way longer or need a special set up to sharpen the "high end steels". I have no problems sharping them with a stone and does not seem to take any longer than sharping a SAK or 1095 for that matter. Hell, I can get VG10, S30V Cm154 and so on, razor sharp on the bottom of a coffee cup right along with a SAK.
Dont get me wrong, I love my SAKs and Spyderco makes some sweet folders.

The little 58mm's are so thin in cross section, they take a shaving edge with very little effort. Top of a car window, bottom of a coffee mug, back of a legal pad, back of a belt. Plus the little SAK's have the scissors SD tip nail file, and tweezers. All really useful tools that the Spyderco doesn't have. If I could only have one small keychain knife, it's a 58mm SAK!

Spyderco? We don't need no steenkin' Spyderco!
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

Hm, I'd say easily retrievable that Rambler is.

As it's an ALOX Rambler, no tweezers.

Whenever you want it back, just offer her an upgrade to a Cellidor Rambler with some fancy scales and TWEEZERS. ;)

I'd blame Kirky too...but really Z, she has your number!  A Rambler and First Mate lost in one week.  Personally, I'd kick her out!

Either that, or cease hostilities and negotiate a prisoner swap.
