Byrd vs. Spyderco
on: December 17, 2015, 06:45:11 AM
They're the same brand, I get that. But when you're dealing with the lower end offerings from Spyderco, how do they differ from the Byrds as they're both made of 8cr steel. Does it then just become a matter of which brand you have printed on the blade?

Its a bit more complicated than that. Product and brand positioning.

The Chinese models that compare head to head like the Tenacious and Raven (both liner locks with G10 scales) are pretty much the same thing but the Byrds bring in more features like forward choils and "better" steel now that they are in BD-1.

The Byrd line also offers models similar to the Japanese Spydercos, Cara Cara and Meadowlark 2 vs Endura and Delica etc; again with added features like forward choils, G10 and even Titanium Scales; These cannot be compared for fit and finish or quality of blade steel but functionality is right up there.

So you may even get "more" for the lesser brand.
To me it feels like they try "dumb down" and simplify the Chinese Spydercos to not compete with their other models and upsell and update the Chinese Byrds.

I am in the market for a BD-1 Raven 2 as well as a Titanium Cara Cara 2.
A Tenacious in American BD-1 or something like 14C28N would be a knockout punch but would cut into their higher end market.
I think they may make a BD-1 Tenacious as it seems these new models from Byrd could have been test models to see if the Chinese maker can heat treat it properly.

Hm... too lazy to Google.
Is there a Byrd equivalent to the Dragonfly?
I'd try a serrated one too, with nicer scales than FRN, but cba to shell out another 75 USD on a Spyderco...

For the record, I've only fondled a few of the G10 Byrds.....no experience with the FRN models

I found that due to the choil, the ergos of the Byrds are better for me.

I had a Cara Cara 2 and a Tenacious in my hands, I'm not going to say Fit & Finish.......fit is 100%, finish is 80% compared to the Spyderco.
IMO, once the Byrd's had some pocket time to smooth the edges you wouldn't know.

Personally I want to complete my Tenacious family first after I was informed of the BD1 steel upgrade on the Byrds, I'll wait for those....

I have to say that I prefer the Byrd Tern to the UKPK.  Not that the UKPK is a bad knife at all (in any version) it's just that the Tern has better ergonomics for me.  Not obviously poorer F&F either, though it is a cheaper steel.

^^^ This!

I own an original black G10 UKPK with S30V blade. It's hardly had any use. The Byrd Tern and Wings Slipit have seen far more use. In fact I liked the Tern so much I bought a spare.

I've never bought another Spydie as I don't think they give the value for money that the Byrd knives do. I don't see any valid reason to pay the premium

As they all cut stuff  >:D, the differences center on cost, blade steel and overall fit & finish.

At $18.69 shipped on Amazon Prime, the Cara Cara 2 is quite a value.

Spyderco Endura.

I have the Robin G10, it changes the dynamic of the dragonfly enough to ruin its primary benefit (weight); I prefer the larger Meadowlark; its a lot of knife in an ergonomic hefty package.

The fit and finish can vary, on both brands.
I have both the original and the new Cara Cara. Original in FRN, excellent fit and finish, Cara Cara 2 has a protruding backsprng where it catches the blade. But so does my Dragonfly and that cost a bit more. ;)

I'm leaning towards the Spyderco Resilience. But the Byrd prices put them in borderline impulse buy range. This is a dangerous dangerous place..... 50's thread is pushing me back toward the Spyder....

Pack your lunch a couple of days and go for the better got and finish of the Spydie.

The smaller Tenacious is a good size for EDC too.

A Spyderco Resilience along with a Byrd Cara Cara 2 FRN will set you back about $65

The best of both worlds.

I don't have tim eto read all the posts now, but I've had Spyderco Ambitious for 9-10 months now and also a Byrd Meadowlark thanks to Corwyn's generous giveaway. Both are among my favourite knives. Very stable and comfortable in the hand. No blade play, no problems at all. Of course, they can't be compared 100% because of the differnt locking, different blade shape, length, handle material and so on. But to me, they're quite similar in quality. I'm no expert at all as I don't tend to read a lot of info on knives, so ...that's just from my short Spyderco experience :D
