SAK mod idea:The Pacifist
on: December 16, 2015, 09:28:39 PM
So,hypothetically speaking,I'm looking at the idea(again) of a Vic pocket tool box. A 91mm without any blades.

I'm sure I'd seen Rahmed do a mod that put the opener layer on the corkscrew backspring, but what other tools would be good on that spring?

What other layers would you add?

And please, this is not about having a discussion on knife laws,OK? Thank you all in advance!

Easy.

Combo tool/metal file (instead of large blade); corkscrew on back
Saw; fine flat driver
Scissors; hook w/nail file
Pliers
Bit driver
Plus scales, obviously.

I'm trying to decide what tools I'd want to do the same thing.

I want:
Scissors
Pliers
File
3d Phillips
Caplifter
Small pen blade

I think the magnifier is the only thing that can ride with the inline phillips, so I guess I'd have to have that and I can't think of anything to ride with the caplifter except the can opener? Ideally I'd have the 3 tool layer with phillips, caplifter and pen blade like Syph does but it won't work on the 91mm...

Hmmm

Well first of all, I'd rather have a bladeless pliers tool or scissors tool, than a knifeless knife....

That said, if you did want to do it, you either need to put a thinner tool set on the blade layer, or.... bugger, there is no "or" .... there is no thicker backsprings you can put the corkscrew on instead  :-\ Also you might need to start tweaking springs or tangs to get stuff to sit properly.

I think I'll stick with the bladeless pliers or scissors idea myself  :D

As to what tools I'd want on there, it depends when/where I'd intend carrying such an item. About town, I wouldn't need a saw for example. Would I be carrying anything else that already has a Phillips?

Sorry John, having trouble getting into gear on this one, as I can't tune into the wants and needs of the project

I like this minus the pliers. Are you sure the file would fit along side the combo tool? Have you maybe tried it?

No, not tried it but I want to give it a go.  Enki's old Mountaineer might come in handy for that. :tu:

No worries Al,it is just a hypothetical at the moment. But in short answer as to why this than a bladeless multi,it's just smaller and more pocketable(just )

Well that one has the new SS file so it would be twice as good. ;)

Might need to bend the base a bit, lightly to the side to make space.

Yep, that was the plan.  Just need to see if the tang is interchangeable with the blade.

Have had some issues with public venues recently, seems the mild mannered Jetsetter "looks like a knife" enough to require I check it at the door (2 different places). Never had trouble with TSA or any gov't buildings, but I guess I could conceivably cause a panic waving it around in a violent manner or something. I have spent several minutes fully deploying the Jetsetter on several occasions, which gets tiresome, I don't appreciate having to prove my honesty. I just have an OPT or other on my keyring now, it's easier for stupid and or officious rent-a-cops to overlook.

Voted Saw, scissors, magnifier/philips, and other. Add a can opener and regular large flat blade screwdriver (opener layer), make it in Alox with a pocketclip and I'm in.

Cap lifter/can opener opposite inline Philips.

For me Urban means well groomed (to a fault :P). So, scissors and nail-file are a must. There also has to be a cap-lifter because that is way cool. Cork-screw is a no go, you can't open a bottle of "Chateau Margaux" with such a crude tool, that is what those expensive wine-openers are for (unless you intend to gold plate your SAK, then its cool again).
You will need a CT-bit-holder it has that Urban-gadgetry-factor you can't miss (it's also a handy tool but that is irrelevant).
The Pharmaceutical Spatula is also brilliant to deliver "snuff" to your nose (integral part of the urban life-style).
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

I'd argue that with some nice wooden scales a SAK is up for any bottle of wine. Most fancy/expensive wine-openers are way to much form over function. There are superior tools, most notably the sommelier-style two step and the Rapid counter-top model, but neither of these are anything you'd bring with you in your everyday life (especially not the Rapid, that's like 5 pounds of metal). This is where the SAK shines, the best tool is the one you have at hand and so on...

And yes, I've spent far too much time contemplating wine-openers after I found a Rapid for the local equivalent of 5$.

Ahh but you are missing the point... it's irrelevant how good it works, the only thing that matters is that it is flashier-/more expensive-/cooler than the other guys :P

Also, I would accept wooden scales (like gold) if it is something noble and exotic :D

Nah, I get it, I just think that one would look very much a fool with a 200$ corkscrew that doesn't pull corks or does so badly. As for expensive, the Rapid is on sale on Amazon @ 740$. (down from 910$) Then again that Swiss made quality works wonders.

Edit: And you'd most certainly be the coolest guy in the company if you "saved the day" even if it was with the cheapest of openers.
