New watch for christmas
on: January 06, 2016, 05:37:41 AM
I know its a bit late, but I've just got back from holiday. This is what I got fro christmas, and ive had my eye on it for a while. When I first saw it it went against everything I wanted in a watch, but it was ideal in every way. I like how there is no wasted space, and all the features make a useful addition to my arm. I have since taken it surfing, which is probably the most demanding task for a watch, and it has held up well.

Seiko Flightmaster SND255

It has
-stopwatch
-split timing
-100m water resistance
-lume that stays readable all night.

The most interesting thing about this watch is the bezel, which functions a a unit converter and slide rule, and can convert feet, meters, kilometers, miles, nauts, litres, gallons, fuel pounds (whatever that is), oil pounds and kilograms. it gan also do a bunch of operations.

you can expect to pay $130 aud, and 1 battery says it will last 3 years.

On aircraft, fuel is often measured in pounds. On a large aircraft, the gross weight at take-off is as critical as maintaining the trim. The weight of the fuel doesn't change with temperature, however the volume does. Weighing fuel just works better. Fuel consumption can also be measured or calculated in pounds per hour.

This is why airplane drivers (aka pilots) wear fancy watches. The sun glasses they wear are to hide their bloodshot eyes after trying to read the tiny print on their fancy watches.

All joking aside, that is a nice looking watch!

hmm, but why are fuel pounds different to pounds?

Sorry, I don't have a surfboard, I went with a surf instructor and borrowed one of theirs. I might have to get one though, it was a lot of fun  :D

Great watch!  I really like that one.

To understand the importance of properly calculating fuel in an aircraft, read up about the infamous Gimli Glider:

Cheers Def - very interesting! Especially this bit;
Quote
They immediately searched their emergency checklist for the section on flying the aircraft with both engines out, only to find that no such section existed.[3] Captain Pearson was an experienced glider pilot, so he was familiar with flying techniques almost never used in commercial flight. To have the maximum range and therefore the largest choice of possible landing sites, he needed to fly the 767 at the optimal glide speed. Making his best guess as to this speed for the 767, he flew the aircraft at 220 knots (410 km/h; 250 mph). First Officer Maurice Quintal began to calculate whether they could reach Winnipeg. He used the altitude from one of the mechanical backup instruments

Yes, apparently the plane was so advanced that no one figured it could fail.

Oops.

That reminds of the memoirs of a French foreign legionare who survived Dien bien phu.
They para dropped bulldozers in to make the air strip. The bulldozers where French, but the drop was to be made by a US plane and crew. The weight of the dozers was labeled in  kg, but the parachute fitters thought it was pounds.
The legionares had to dig up the remains of the dozers out of their craters for parts...

Nice watch! I really like the look of many Seiko chronographs, and that's certainly a sharp looking one.

Unfortunately, while I like how chronographs look, I can't wear most of them. It bugs my OCD that the large second hand doesn't tick except when using it as a stop watch.
