What order of layers for Victorinox Yeoman
on: January 11, 2016, 03:01:24 PM
I'm going to make a 91mm Yeoman, but not sure which way to make it.  The original Vic Yeoman (with the grey mag glass) had the magnifier layer on the outside and the scissors in the middle.  The Swiss Bianco one has the magnifier/phillips in the middle, and the scissors on the outside.  Custom ones I have seen done both ways.  What are the pros and cons?  I'll be using the new magnifier if that makes any difference.

Phillips in the middle - it's a bit nicer to use that way.  Don't think it makes a difference when using the magnifier or scissors.

+1 for Phillips in the middle layer. Main reason is that the Phillips doesn't sit on the outer liner when closed. (My Yeoman mod is Phillips on the outer layer and it bothers me every time I look at it.)

2 votes for the +B style then, sounds like a plan.  One concern I had with that style is whether the Phillips would block the nail nick of the scissors, but I think it should be OK.

I've got one of the +Bianco models; the online Phillips is very handy for its use, being centered (more or less) to the force, like a regular screwdriver.

Apologies in advance for resurrecting quite an old thread (though at least it was this year!), but I'm looking (with help from @hiraethus) to assemble a modern Yeoman from an Explorer and Compact I manged to get quite cheap and was thinking about just this thing - @shibafu did you go with the Phillips/magnifier layer in the middle in the end? If so, can you still get at the nail nick for the scissors okay?

If it's not much more complex to do, and doesn't cause tool access problems, think I would prefer the  Phillips/magnifier layer in the middle, so the Phillips isn't next to the scales, and is more centred to the handle. Looks neater too.

Phillips layer in the middle for sure.  The old phillips and mag layer could go out the outside, but the modern does not fit well that way.  Its better to have the phillips centered in the SAK anyhow, so modern config is the way to go.  The scissors open fine.

Another superfluous vote for Phillips in the middle. Easier to use the driver there.

Okay, thanks for confirming/clarifying, sounds good!

All of the yeoman mods I've built are done with the screwdriver/ mag glass in the middle layer. It's much nicer to use that way and no risk of dinging up the liner on the outside of the knife.

Also, it just looks better to me.

All my Yeoman mods have the inline phillips in the middle layer... better torque for me when using the phillips... Since I use the scissors a lot as well, I find I can do more fine cutting with it sitting on the outside...

Just got a used spartan lite with a bent tip on the small blade, might as well mod it into a Yeoman Lite. Just so happens that the phillips is already in the middle.

Still on the hunt for the original Yeoman though (for its collectibility)...

I did go that way, and as everyone has said, it works perfectly.  No problems accessing the scissors.

Thanks everyone, and especially to @hiraethus who has agreed to make up a modern Yeoman for me (with centred Phillips/Magnifyer layer) from a Compact and Explorer I'll supply. Am now starting to think about the possibility of other mods that make use of the Compact layers...
