Introducing the Leatherman Awry
on: January 22, 2016, 03:06:30 AM
Been thinking of a way to get "slab of tools in a scale" style of the older LM with the one handed capabilities of the Wave when it hit me; it doesn't have to be symmetrical, so I mounted a Blast arm with cherry picked tool set and a Wave half onto some Rebar pliers.

It's actually more comfortable when using as a knife, as the Blast half in the palm has fewer components to dig into one's hand.

I actually LOVE this mod.  it looks odd, but I can see the appeal from a functionality point of view.

great job

Mind blown. Nice work thinking outside of the box. I'm trying to figure out how to get better scissors in the tool now.

Nicely done, it's like a SOG PowerAssist (the asymmetrical factor with only one handle containing outside accessible blades) but with better tools. Good on you for taking the best of three tools and combining into one.

Many thanks for the kind words.  I kind of want to do another w/ 3D Phillips and bit driver.

I still have the other arm from each, plus some spare tools, so I could make another just like it, but I would have to reverse the slant on the OHO blade and file so they would engage the liner lock.  Is this possible or would I have too much play?

 :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

LOVE IT!!!!! :hatsoff: :drink:

This seems a far easier way to make a knifeless Wave. Saw, file and pocket clip on the Wave arm, and a Blast arm full of goodies on the other side. :tu:

I'll be digging out my older Wave I played around with modding and my empty Blast chassis, and giving this a try  :salute:

Nope. I think that Blade was a hard R as well

Thanks again for the kind word everybody.

Not difficult at all, it's all removing screws.  The only actually metal work went into the pointy flat head and the awl, which I ground depth so they would be pointier.  That is the Rebar flathead, as the Blast/Kick flathead is thicker but has less depth.

You definitely solved the problem every body had with the rebar head swap on the wave, and having to loose the scissors
Thanks for the great inspiration

A tti mated with zytel? How about using a rebar handle and charge? Bet that would look sweet

Wave and Rebar handle would pair nicely. How about a new model Surge half paired with an ST300 half? Think of the tools! Might have to try that one...

Yeah, I was thinking Surge mated with EOD (inside saw blade exchanger).

Wow! Great job. I am pretty surprised that nobody has tried this previously. It makes so much sense when you see it. Personal preference, I would prefer a Rebar handle mated with the Wave handle. But that would be purely for appearance purposes, but I bet it's narrower, so that would probably feel weird. I bet this thing is a real step up in comfort during use. Especially when using the no-plier implements. Not that the Wave is painful, but with the spine of the knives sticking out, and the edges of the outer tool channels facing out, it isn't all that comfortable when you have to generate a lot of torque. And in plier-mode, with the Wave handle turned in towards the palm and the zytel on your fingers, I bet this is a dream to bear down on.

So basically, what I'm trying to say is: Wow! Great job.

That may be cool too.  However, the Rebar has the sloped neck design and that may look odd since that area would be much thinner than the Charge.
