Trashcan Treasure
on: September 01, 2008, 04:47:56 PM
Sometimes my habit of checking the tool dumpster pays off.

This riveted PST was thrown away by my collegue, who had replaced it with a Fuse for some customer.
The knifeblade was quite worn and had lost it's point, but with a little shaping and sharpening is fully functional again.
The rest of the tool is also still in very good condition, as you hopefully can see in the pictures.

What do you think, shall i throw it back in the dumpster ?  :D

Why can't I ever find stuff like that?  Keep that bad boy, and use the crap out of it.  Old soldiers like that never die.

Were they throwing it out just because of the messed up knife blade?
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

My collegue throws everything away he can't fix, and we don't have spare rivets or parts for these baby's so i can't fix this one either.

You can do that, or still use it. I have seen guys with pocket knives so worn it isn't even funny, but they still swear by them cause they carried them for years, and still do what they need them to do. If it still works, I would use it, or put it in a collection, because that is a heck of a find!

That doesn't seem like a good idea to me, as things like this tend to get lost in Limbo.

Except for the blade, which is fully functional again and able to shave hair, the tool is in very good condition.
The pliertips still line up without any play, the smallest screwdriver is completely straight and looks like it has never been used, the same with the awl.
Slight wear is only visible on the Philips screwdriver while the file has a little corrosion.

I'm not sure they would even want to try and fix it in Oregon - and to be honest it should be left as it is IMO. As someone who has tried very hard to add one of these to my collection (without success so far), the last thing I would want to do is replace any of the original parts as in my eyes it would no longer be "original".

These riveted tools represent a really significant stage in LMs story - if the blade is "used" I'd leave it be personally!

Thanks for sharing the pics with us kwakster, and if you really don't know what to do with it - let me know!

I used to come here a lot.

The previous owner's incompitence may possibly prove darwinism

Kwakaman your colleague seems a right dill. When I started to read your post I was expecting a generic PST & then I saw the BIG beautiful  lettering on the tool & thought holy crap someone threw out a RIVETED PST . That man is going straight to multitool hell. BTW it looks lovely & the blade looks fine to me  :salute:. What did you say to your colleague/noodle nut ?
