Go on the leatherman website now they have a knifes rebar with scissors
I have a Leatherman surge, rebar, wave, and a super tool 300. I can also solve 3x3x3, 2x2x2, and 2x2x4 rubix cubes.

That looks really cool!

I guess my question is, what's the point?

If it is to produce a "knifeless" multitool to use in "secure" areas where sharps are not allowed, then the saw and serrated blade defeat that purpose. I could not carry the knifeless Rebar into a federal building or other secure area.

But OTOH, if a guy carries a regular clipped folding knife, like a Spyderco, then removing the knife on the Rebar sort of makes sense.  But just barely.

I'm probably missing something.

In my view, which Tim never asked about, the knifeless Rebar should lose the saw and serrated blade so it is truly friendly in so-called secure buildings and worksites.

I'll still buy one, though, so yet again, Tim wins in the end.   :salute:

Powernoodle, the knifeless Rebar does not have a serrated blade. At least not in the pics

The saw is a bit iffy, I could see the tool being confiscated due to that. But where Powernoodle got the idea that it had a serrated edge I don't know (that'd really defeat the point).

Thanks, you are right.  But it does have the saw, which still bars it from secure areas.

So what's the point of the knifeless Rebar?  The website says its perfect for "environments and and job sites that need a handy set of tools, yet don’t allow for knife blades."

Is there really any no-knife zone that allows you to carry a saw with 50 razor-sharp, throat slashing teeth?  Maybe there are and I just don't know about them.  My bro-in-law is the manager of a Dow chemical plant.  He could turn a couple of valves and kill 10,000 people, but Dow won't let him carry a knife.  Maybe they would let him carry a saw.

Actually, there are only 26 teeth on a Rebar saw.  "50" is a common metaphor meaning "26".

I believe 27 throat slashing teeth is the cutoff for being legal in no-knife zones. 26 throat slashing teeth is okay, though :salute:

See, that explains it.  There is a simple explanation for almost everything.  26 teeth = safe.  27 = deadly.

I think 26 teeth are about as dangerous as 50 in this case ;). And that saw will be a problem at many places,

I keep wondering why the tool-designers at these companies seem to make this kind of slip-ups all the time (especially lately?). There's this case of the non-safe bladeless. The bit driver on the Signal hammer (just at the weakest spot). The new SOG Reactor with both a seemingly substandard Philips inside and the much better bit holder. Skeletool RX with "hidden" glass breaker.

If I was a "folder guy" I wouldn't mind the knifeless rebar. I would choose it over the gerber bladeless 600. It has a nice tool set for someone who always carries a dedicated blade. Maybe the problem (same they had with the signal) is marketing. The signal is more of a bushcraft tool, not a survival tool. This rebar is one that compliments a folder, not a government approved multi.
Maybe I'm wrong but it seems Leathermans marketing department is overstating the expectations for their tools, changing expectations, which make the tools a let down. All in all the knifeless rebar is good. I just like my Rebar II more (rebar + scissors - small driver) I may still check it out just to compare configuration.

Similar to the SOG PowerLock Traveler. No way you're getting on a airplane or train with a PowerLock

Bad marketing

I was looking into the Signal (minus yellow plastic) as a more complete Skeletool, i.e. more of an urban thing really. Think replacing the saw with a pair of scissors and have bit storage instead of the sharpener and possibly a light instead of the whistle. Suddenly more of something you might give your kid who's moving out. A basic toolbox in a small package.
I realize the Signal will sell well enough with the Survival hype going and I think Leatherman is way to afraid of stealing sales from themselves.

The bit driver on the Signal hammer (just at the weakest spot).

It works though. I'll be giving it some harder tests this week so we'll see if it breaks.

I like keeping tools and electronics separate. Scissors yes put them in. What I am so completely over is my kids always wanting to use the whistle.

I want a Rebar with the file replaced with a replaceable file/saw option, and scissors where the saw is I guess.

That was a feature that I was really hoping Leatherman would implement on the Knifeless Rebar. They already have one on the SuperTool 300EOD, i'm sure it isnt that hard to scale down...

Perhaps what I want is a Surge. But I really like the classic Leatherman vibe that the Rebar gives off.
