Wanting to create an inventory.....
on:
March 04, 2016, 03:14:02 PM
I realise that I'm starting to loose track of what I actually have in my collection.
Can anybody recommend a decent app (ie, simple to use) that I could install on my iPhone (always at hand to check) that would allow me to input details including name, model numbers etc etc and thumbnail pics would be incredible but not important.
Ideally I'd like to be able to complete pages and then send them to the printer so I can file everything away.
Any ideas?

I use a app called Libib for keeping track of books. It is more for media, but it might be useable for your purpose.

I would suggest keeping it fairly simple and using Excel. You can set up categories for Manufacturer, Model, Color, Sheath Type, Cost, Date Purchased and even include a photo if you like, and it's fairly easy to set up. That's what I used for the $2 Challenge listing.
Plus it works across virtually any platform, there are mobile versions for phones and tablets, you can add or remove columns, rows etc so you can add extra info pretty much any time you like. And, if you don't want to buy MS Office you can also use something like Open Office for free.

I'm with Def, I use excel and every now and then I add another column. As well as the search function you can also use sort and filter to narrow down to a particular group of entries. It isn't quite as versatile as a proper database but for simple purposes it is a lot easier for most people.

Use excel on my computer. Have it set up to sort by maker, length and description. Also include model number, price, and several other categories. More reliable that Mk I memory, which has failed me several times recently.

It sounds as though excel is the one to go for.
Thanks to you all for your input - I'll add the app to my phone later today.....and then begin

I use the app Evernote that have on my iphone and on my two computers at home and at work.
It´s very easy but rather complex if you want it to.
The other day I just copied and pasted the list from" Leatherman production timeline" and marked wich ones I have with additional info.
Best thing is that it automatically syncronise everything so your lists are always updated.
That was the problem for me before I ended up with incomplete lists on my different gadgets and my Mt:s on all different locations.
I keep all kind of lists and pictures in it that helps me in alot of situations.

I agree with Def-meister!
Just one more twist, I do use the excel sheet together with dropbox for keeping track of what I own. The beauty of this is both excel sheet and dropbox do work on multi-platform. Once I update the sheet in any of my dropbox(via phone/PC/tablet), then I know all the same spreadsheets will be automatically updated.
