The Ti handles Wenger-Vic I jus made me (pic)
on: March 29, 2016, 10:11:14 PM
Long story short: as soon as the uely steck piooner was announced I decided I should have one, primary for the lust of the Ti handle and  the gorgeus enamelled Swiss Cross on handle that whorks also as unlocking push button. Not to say the bit insert. I bought It and for some time I tried to withstand the main blade, probably the ugliest I had ever seen. During this time I ascked some saks modder if they would axcept to mode it and fit in a 91mm sack blade. Had too warm anwers.
Today I took the plunge ad did the job myself.
Drilling out the main blade's rived was not a great task. I was lucky having in my tool box a cilidrical bit that has the same diameter of the rivet. Once flattened the domed rivet's head,  drilling it out has ben a two minutes job. Then I bought a donoir Vic on flea market (3,5 euros, nearly 4 usd) reshaped the talon and the blade, fitted (with some minor tewaking) in the handle with a screw pin. Everything is working fine, the  button lock locks and desengage, the blade shift perfectly (have some brass washers... just in case). The scales where absolutely unotouched. I am satisfied but may be I will swapp the blade with a Vic gardenr blade soon or later.

I agree, it looks fantastic. Any plans for that monstrous blade?

Yep, that is one ugly blade!
Maybe you can use it in a lawn mower.

How does it appear to You?
I am in dubt if swapping the reshaped the 91mm blade  with one from a Vic Gartner donor.
Lenght would be perfect but the Gartner has a 3mm tang hole while I have whorked with original hole (just lapped inside) fitting a 2,5mm screw pin. I have as much screw as I whant in 3 mm, but those are  threaded alla way long and couldn't be able to find one only partially threaded. So at the moment will stay with the pin I have wich is only end-threaded. Hope I could explain better

Threaded posts are a bit hard to find in those small dimensions - You can buy various imperial sizes through shops like Knifecenter etc. Maybe ask Syph007 for a reliable source, he uses them in hundreds. Only downside is that you will need to get fitting drill bits, too.

Did you already find a Gardener blade? I do have an old one I´d donate to the cause if not. I´d liek to see the outcome.

Hi LowTech. Thankyou so much for Your's preciou infos and kind offer. I jet have one with a rounded sheepfoot shape. Problem is it has a 3mm hole whilst the main pivot I have is 2.5 and fits perfectly on the reshaped Vic Blade I mounted.
If it happens that Your's is a 2,5 mm or less I will gladly swapp with mine and pay both shipping costs. For buyng drilling points no problem: I am always looking for tool's because I run full maintenace tasks on a heard of vintage bikes (two harley, one bmw ) and bicycles, and rifles. Always tampering between metric and inches: DAMN!

Stelug, I and a few others have recently added an in-line awl with 3mm pivot holes to a 91mm frame using 2.5mm pins and it works fine. Give it a try and see if it makes much difference.

I've also seen someone make a shim from brass tubing to make up the difference in diameter.

Great work by the way.  :salute:

Guys do they still make the Ueli Steck/Titanium knives?  I didn't know if Vic kept them going.

I do work on older Bikes, too! Mainly Japanese, though. Some Hinckley Triumphs and BMWs in the mix, but no Harleys yet.
I am quite sure that the Pivots on all Gardeners are the same?! Maxbe someone can say more about them?! Didn´t PTRSAK mod some?

They are definitely disco'd. Not sure if it was before or after Wenger was bought out, but I know Vic never made them under the Delemont line.

Here it is release n2. For whom may be interested the Gartner blade has an uniform thikness, scalbel sharoening, seems of a different steel from the common Vic blades and shows different color,  different textures,  and appaer to be deeply magnetized. mind this was an old Gardner model but I bet is a steel with more carbon in. appear good?

Thanks sir!  I didn't think they were still in production, but thought there might be a chance.

Another method if you don't have proper tubing with correct inside and outside diameters. You can use solid brass rod to plug the oversize hole, pein it to make it fit very tightly, file, sand or mill it down to the tang thickness, and then drill it out to the smaller pin diameter. Also allows moving the hole center a little if that's desired.

Excellent mod!

grat tips indeed. I'll test if the blade will develope any play. at the moment differencies between the 2,5 hole blade and the 3mm are barely perceptible. is it possible to use a full threaded steel crew amsin pivot?   I cannot find any partially threaded
ps I have added brass washer to fill thebgsp in thikness with the original blade too.
