The trailer had a lot of dislikes on Youtube, but I think it looked not bad.  I'll watch it on Netflix in about a year.

It looks terribad to me... so very cliche and the girls definitely don't look the part... I mean making a female Ghostbuster female would have been cool. but switching all four seems like a cry for free female views...

Haven't seen the trailer yet, but on the whole I think it's a good thing. Pity there aren't more roles for women in films and tv that aren't sexualised or subservient so anything that redresses the balance is ok by me.

Young women should be able to see themselves portrayed on the screen (including games) in as positive a way as us men are used to seeing.

As for the rehash of a film that didn't really need a remake I'm less sure about. Has Hollywood run out iof ideas? it seems so with all the unecessary remakes and franchises. If that's the case move over Hollywood and let the independents in.

after the trailer, i'm concerned. i was feeling that this new cast was very much pushed down as the next big thing and some people on there I'm simply not a fan of. but the trailer really made me feel like it's an upcoming mess

for reference:

I giggled a bit at the 2nd slap at the end.

I still don't feel this needed remaking, add it to a now even longer list of movies that don't or didn't need redoing other than to satisfy some person's QHD wet dreams. The originals still hold strong, even if some of it is dated. Some will say it's a sequel of sorts... yet they felt the need to mirror the originals with the casting. One could argue they did the same with The Force Awakens I suppose.

I'm also not a fan of the whole "rule 63" gender swap here... just to be more politically correct or who knows why. (more examples are the new comic Thor being a woman, Captain America being black, not that there's anything wrong with that, but seeing as the characters are otherwise established I think it's only confusing just to write some new stories... create new characters you idiots) You may have noticed in the trailer that while the new Ghostbusters are women, they have a male receptionist, so a complete swap vs the originals.

I'll stop now because there are so many things wrong with this that it would turn very political and unfamily friendly

Personally, yeah more good roles for women would be good.  But why not give them an original script.  I see no point in this remake.  Also in the original the effects have aged well getting more campy with time, cgi does not age well.

This is the first I've heard of it.  I'll watch it, but probably won't go to the theatre to see it.  I think a mixed team (men and women) would have worked better, but who knows, this could turn out to be really good.

Let me put on my grumpy pants for a minute.

The sole purpose of this movie is to make money for the studio and the shareholders.

And nothing else.

Ghostbusters does not exist to promote a particular social agenda, nor to be a morality play on gender and race.  Or anything else.

Its just a goofy movie that will soon fade into oblivion.  And the actresses earned more in 3 months of filming than most of us will earn in 10 years of real employment, so I'm not too concerned whether these roles properly glorify women or other nonsense.

Happy pants back on.   :salute:

I take your point (and agree with it PN) that the film is about making money. Shouldn't we be better than this by now though? Why should non male, non white people have to grow up without seeing positive role models on their screens? I say this as a white western male with all the power that my fortune to be born where I was at the time I was allows me.

I think as a species it's time we were better than this.

As I see it, exactly this angle is played in promoting the movie. Just look at this picture:

That is the main fact that annoys me besides an awful trailer, imo.
In keeping with forum rules on politics I won't indulge in this discussion any further.  :salute:

Leaving aside the whole gender thing, my big issue is that it's a totally different type of comedy, and one that I'm not much of a fan of.  The original was a much more subtle and grown up style.  The only slapstick came from Rick Moranis as the goofy guy who gets possessed.  The main characters are playing it straight.

"The power of the slap compels you"?  I think not. :wait:

What money?  :P

It's a horror comedy with girls. Who is going to watch that?
A purely "guy-genre" with non-that-pretty female leads?

Pitch Perfect 2 did great with half the audience (the girls). Mad Max Fury Road did great with the other half (the boys). Which one of these you reckon are going to see this... guys going to a chick comedy? ... girls going to a movie with ghosts and ectopuke?

It sounds like a huge box office bomb... It's one of those movies you'd be blind to not see go bust: Zoolander 2, Gods of Egypt, Fantastic 4 (the latest one), Jupiter Rising etc.

Had not thought about it before but your right.

I have heard the new vacation movie (which I have not seen) had a similar problem of not understanding the original humor

I doubt it. The movies you listed are not predecessors of a legend of a movie like Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. I doubt it will bomb and predict it will do well even if the movie sucks. Most people just want a new Ghostbusters to watch and you better believe a lot of females will be wanting to see it and the boyfriends will happily be going along. Just my thoughts on how it will do. Only time will tell.

Why should non male, non white people have to grow up without seeing positive role models on their screens?

They don't.  The world of media, entertainment, politics and sports is replete with every flavor of humanity.  More important, though, I would contend that rather than counting genders and colors, we should judge people by the content of their character. When we engage in the counting game, we have already lost.

And back to my thesis, Ghostbusters is just a dumb - though hopefully entertaining - movie, with no social significance.

I'm organizing a Ghost Lives Matter movement.  Until ghostly apparitions are portrayed as positive role models on the big screen, and proportionately represented with Oscar nominations, a vigorous campaign on social media will ensue.  The "B" word ("busters") is an antiquated, anti-apparitional term from the past which should soon find its rightful place on the dung heap of history.  Ghosts are people too.  In fact, they are the most ethereal and vulnerable among us, and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.  Transparent is the new black.
