Schrade Walden Fixed Blade
on: March 23, 2016, 03:13:18 AM
I just purchased my first fixed blade at a flea market in New Hampshire, I wasn't able to look it up on the internet prior to purchasing due to lack of cell service. I paid $25, I can live with the fact that maybe I overpaid, I'll chalk it up as a learning experience. I will most likely carry it around my property depending on your feed back. Is there anything I can do to revitalize the leather handle? The original sheath is in decent shape. I think its from the 1940s-1960s based on the tang stamp info I've found.

Let me know your thoughts on my first fixed blade.

For the leather handle (leather rings), the usual practice was to dip it in some oil, leave it for a few hours and then wipe dry, so that it gets rejuvenated.  This was mainly for dried leather.

I think linseed oil should be OK, but I am not 100% sure on that.

I'd say you did well.  It isn't overly or badly sharpened, leather is intact, and it has a usable sheath which may or may not be original.   I use saddle soap for all leather stuff I have, and it works fine.

I really, really like the looks of stacked leather handles, but they aren't that durable. Looks like it will be a great user, or even to put away in a collection.

Looks great....should clean up well. Seeing that it's a Schrade Walden it is certainly worth $25 and I would say even $40.

You can ask specifics about it over here:

I haven't bought any Schrades lately so I haven't been over there in a while.

Thanks SG, my uncle was telling me if I find any leather handled fixed blades with a good name brand in my hunting I should pick them up.

Looks like a good old knife and a worthy addition to any collection.

Good-on-ya.
