I Seek Crank Radio with AA-batteries

I am looking for a light-weight hand-crank FM-radio, combined with solar-panel and LED-flashlight in one product. It should also charge a smartphone and run on AA NiMh batteries.

I prefer AA-batteries over AAA-batteries, because they have a better capacity-weight ratio. And I want one standard battery-size for my light-weight crank-radio and mini-flashlight.

I want to pack this crank radio in a bug-out-bag. So the weight should not exceed 10 ounce. I prefer lighter.

I believe that Eton is a well-regarded brand.  I've had an Eton for years, and it has been reliable.

The version I have, the Eton FR250, is no longer made.  I did not realize it, but Eton and Grundig apparently are the same thing.  I guess that one bought the other.  Mine uses 3x AA batteries (though I have only used the crank), plus LED and phone charger.  No solar on mine.

I love these crank radios as part of a comprehensive emergency/survival plan, but they are also good just for general usage.

But I would say that any Eton model that has the features you are looking for would be a good place to start.

I appreciate you starting this thread.  I got out my Eton FR-250, cranked it up, and am listening to the Bob and Tom show.  There is something strangely satisfying about using "free" electricity.

I have an Eton FR-400. It also takes 3 AA batteries. I bought it because it is weather resistant. It hasn't failed me yet. Yes, Grundig bought out the Eton name. My Eton is basically a Grundig FR-400.

It weighs 1 lb. 3 oz. or 539 g. That is way to heavy for a bug out bag. About eight ounce would be much better. We could start another topic about hwavy-weight crank radios.

IMHO time is money. But if you like to play with the hand crank, I suggest you buy another crank radio to save for emergencies, because the crank may wear out in the long run.

In a disaster our life may depend on knowing exactly what is going on, where and when. It helps to decide to stay in our current location, or evacuate, etc. The radio can give flood warnings, or updates about civil unrest in aan urban setting, etc. Reliable information is crucial.

Many smartphnoes do also have an FM radio receiver, but their batteries have limited capacity, and they often need a headset to listen to the radio.

It weighs 1.5 pounds. I cannot carry that weight in a bug out bag for days, together with water, food, clothing, multi-tool and other survival gear.

Agreed, this radio is a little large and heavy for a bug out bag. However, you can take the Eton and Grundig name to the bank. They make great gear...and they do make lighter radios for your application.

With that said, I love mine. Mind you, I do not use it for my bug out bag. Mine comes with its own carry case, and it comes in very handy when I have a power outage and I need to find out what is happening locally.
