What do you think of this Iphone deal?
on: May 11, 2016, 07:14:07 PM
I was paying my bill for my prepaid and the lady told me about a deal they had going. $199 (for the phone) + $45 (for the month of service). Its a Iphone 5s. I get unlimited talk and text with 2GB of data every month for $45 a month. I am thinking of doing this. What do you guys think. Is the 5s worth $199? I feel like $45 a month is a fair price now a days. Plus its a prepaid plan so I am not stuck in a contract. If I decide not to continue I keep the phone and there is no penalties. If I continue its $45 a month. What does everyone think? Shoudl I do it?

How long does the contract run?

It seems expensive to me, which probably means it is. The iPhone 5s runs around 300$ here. To me that does not sound like a good deal but maybe the rules are different in the US.
Last contract I had was 20$/month for 24 month (free talk, 1GB download + unlimited download at reduced speed) and 300$ off on any smartphone.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

There is no contract like I mentioned in the first post. If I decide I do not want to pay anymore I dont and they recycle my phone number after a month or two. No penalties at all. I keep the phone.

Why would it seem expensive to you if the 5s runs $300 there? I would be getting it for $199. The service would be unlimited talk, text, and 2GB of data every month. Is it the monthly cost you find expensive?

Well, I operate under the assumption that everything is cheaper if you are not in Switzerland :D

You can get the 5s on amazon for 260$ (unlocked). That would be an important question, is the phone unlocked, can you use it with other carriers?

I highly doubt it since its from AT&T directly. That makes no difference in my decision though.

Sounds like a great deal. Prepaid or not.

I have an iPhone 5 and it is great, 5s even better and still has that reall nice clean edged design. Smaller and more manageable for men's pockets then the 6 too.

I'm looking at getting a new phone, probably 6s, I'm not sure about waiting for the new one later in the year... But it'll cost me about $30 for the phone a month plus the cellular plan, they are moving away from se,King phones outright now. They call it the att next or installment billing.

So if I pay $30 for 1 year that's $360 and the phone still doesn't belong to me... It's strange and I don't prefer it.

Save that extra cash for tools!  :climber:

Well, our good friend Dave Bowen is not a manager at Verizon.  I'll send him a message and see what he thinks about whether this is a good deal or not.  :D

I feel it's a good deal considering its not on contract. Working for Verizon I cannot offer you that phone at the price with that plan offerings. We don't have that iPhone even on prepaid and if you got it on device payment plan (aka EDGE) it would be way more expensive. I say it's a good deal, run with it. Just be sure to use Wi-Fi where you can to curb your data and not run over your 2gigs.

Seems like I'm overruled :P

Well, if one thinks about it, the US being that much larger and that much less densely populated, I guess it makes sense that the monthly plan is high.
The only thing that could make that deal cheaper is probably the release of the iPhone 7, but that is a long way off as it is expected for September.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Cell phone plans here are very much different than in Europe.  I've noticed that a lot over the years.

Canada is especially hard as we have a relatively small population (less than half the UK) but on such a large, spread out area.  Maintaining a network over a vast area like that is expemsive, and with a relatively small userbase.....   :ahhh

You are hard pressed to find many cell plans in Canada at a reasonable price.  Here are plans from the three major carriers:

Rogers:
http://www.rogers.com/consumer/wireless
Starting at $75/mth

Bell:
http://www.bell.ca/Mobility/Cell_phone_plans
Starting at $70/mth

Telus:
http://www.telus.com/en/on/mobility/plans/?INTCMP=TcomHomeTile_MOB_Plans
Starting at $35/mth, but limited use only and no data package.

if you live in a most metropolitan areas it won't matter. Even most smaller areas.

I have both Verizon and AT&T currently.  ;)

That's the thing. You have 6 lines and are probably in a 2 year contract. I assume you have AT&T home phone and internet as well as they no longer offer unlimited data unless you have their internet at your house.

Just a update. I did not get the iphone.

Get a straight talk phone. Same price for it. $199 for the phone and $45 a month. Unlimited talk/text but it includes 5gb of high speed data and after that it cuts to 1/2 speed unlimited data. If you get the right SIM card it still uses att service towers but with a different carrier (if it's available in your area)
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Quick update. I went to pay my bill today and asked if they still had the iphone deal going. they do and now they bumped it up to 3GB for the same price.

If I had $199 to spare I would do it. I may have to sell some stuff.

Sometimes it's good sometimes it isn't. There are different SIM cards for different carriers. I just made sure to use the one I knew worked good. But looks like you have it all covered :tu:

Very generous of you bud! How do I say this without sounding like a smurf......

I normally never feel comfortable accepting money from others and have declined many times as it just does not feel right to me. In this situation I actually would swallow my pride and gratefully accept your generosity. The only "problem" is if its just you "helping" me then I am still in the same boat as I am now. I will never ask anyone to donate to me as I would definitely not feel right doing so. If others come across this thread and decide they would like to help then that is incredibly nice of them, but again I am in no way interested in seeking out funds or trying to make people aware of the situation. I feel strange even writing this right now. If others participate then I will accept and try to work something out to help the forum in exchange and to show my gratitude. If not then I really do appreciate the willingness you have already shown.  :salute:

If it happens it happens and I will be forever grateful. If not then it is not a problem at all.

NKlamerus is the brave soul who is my "paypal guy" so if funds are being sent it will be to him. I just spoke with him. Anyone generous enough to chip in can PM him for his payapl info if necessary.

All I can say it thank you Grant for being incredibly generous and thoughtful to say the least.  :hatsoff:

I have Straight Talk and agree the service is getting worse. Straight Talk oversold it's Talk, Text, Data plans and are using other carrier's towers.
The other carriers don't even offer similar plans to their customers. So in retaliation the other companies reduced the amount of towers Straight Talk can use, lowered the signal for Straight Talk users, and Straight Talk users get lower priority now too - the reason for many disconnections w/o notice.
