Keyring SAK just for the scissors?
on: June 13, 2016, 05:53:40 AM
Does anyone else here carry two SAKs just for the scissors?  I really prefer carrying a 2 layer SAK such as a Tourist or Small Tinker, but I frequently use scissors so I keep a Midnite Manager on my keyring.  I'd prefer to just get use to carrying a three layer, and use the Manager as a backup, but the two layer SAK really does fit in the pocket well.

Yes. I often carry a classic for the scissors when I carry a rebar or Super Tool 300.  They are important to me.  I'm going to miss them during the July challenge.

I just carry a Compact. Then I have everything I need.

I do, unless I'm carrying my Huntsman or Handyman.  I'll even team up my PST, Rebar or Supertool with either my Mighty Minichamp or Evo 81.

Yup. The Compact is a no go for me, as I want the opener layer (superior pry-prod-thing and an awl), and Spartan + Classic both weighs less and is a nicer carry than a Climber. Also, the Climber doesn't feel totally comfortable in my hand. Both the Camper and Huntsman feel fine. It's the way the scissors rest against my index finger when using the big blade on the Climber with my most common grip I don't like.

All this micro-optimization is something I enjoy with SAKs.

Edit: Oh,.and the small blade is the most used tool.on all my SAKs that have one.

I definitely carry a 58mm just for the scissors.  That is, of course, only if the other SAK or MT I have on me doesn't already have good scissors of it's own.

I always carry a 58 mm... no matter what else I carry. There's always been a small Vic or Wenger on my key ring. :)

The compact would be perfect if it had a Phillips driver of some type on it.  I don't drink wine and I rarely if ever need a mini-driver, but I encounter Phillips screws daily.

Consider the new Pioneer X.  Can opener works fine as phillips.

The Classic has been on my keychain  for as long as I can remember  because  of  the fact it
has a very good little scissors

I'll take a look at the Pioneer X.  I carried a SwissTool with my EDC for years, but I'm tired of the added weight, and I'm becoming more of a minimalist.

I have an alox Rambler on one set of keys and alox Minichamp on the other. Scissors are the most used tools on either.
Scissors are super useful to me and having a 58mm SAK on me means that I can carry a Farmer as my main knife.

Still hanging on getting hold of a Pioneer X.

If I don't have a SAK with a scissors I'll grab my pocket tools chest. It's a great tool set and I really like the extra length in the 65mm.

For me, it is always a dilemma; small 58mm is so small you don't feel them
93 mm and everything else is beefier, more "tool like" or pro like but heavy. It's always a balancing act isn't?

But to stay on Topic... The scissors are crucial in every day carry...that's for sure.

I read somewhere that a grown Male can comfortably carry half his own weight... Hmmm ????

The DofE could be just what you want then, if you can get hold of one.  Like a Compact but with back-side phillips in place of the corkscrew.  It does have the round-nose blade, but that's fixable.  And no plus scales, also easily fixable of course.

I carry an Executive just for it's scissors  That way I can carry a whole range of different MTs and still have a good sized set of scissors with me :tu:

I like that added length too.  It seems to be a little handier, IMO.

Scissors in the EDC...yes, absolutely!   :tu:
58mm on the keychain...not for me.  I go too many places where I have to take them off because knives can't be carried everywhere I go (eg, airlines, sports stadiums, local courts, etc.)   :ahhh

When wearing professional dress, I carry a Rambler or Manager.  When doing business casual, I carry an 84mm Golfer.  When casual, I typically carry a 91mm Golfer or Compact.  If I know I don't need a corkscrew, I carry my Compact mod with a Phillips.  If I feel the need to pry something, I just use the Gerber Shard, which I can keep on the keychain.

On weekends and outdoor stuff, if I carry a 91mm/93mm without scissors, I usually carry a LM Juice S2 or one of my other MTs on the belt.

Ditto for me; either a Classic SD (celidor or alox), Tomo, or a Rambler.

Yes, I do carry a alox Rambler mainly for the scissors, since my Pioneer doesn't have those. A great combo for my needs :tu:

Fun fact, in modern Greek "tomo" is the singular number accusative declension for volume (the book kind):

ΤΟΜΟΣ, ΤΟΜΟΥ, ΤΟΜΟ, ΤΟΜΕ (the last one is a bit ridiculous unless you are actually talking to the book -OH, TOME- :D )

To me, it looks very similar to a USB drive, so it goes unnoticed, and although it forgoes the tweezers and toothpick, unfortunately, the scales' finish makes it so effectively no wear.  When Adorama had actual deals on eBay, I picked up a spare red, yellow, blue, green, and white Tomo, at a buy two/get one free deal, or something to that effect; ended up paying less than twenty dollars for the bundle. :D
