Ready on the firing line!
on: July 01, 2016, 10:42:22 PM
We decided to get out as a family and fire some rounds off today. I got my Wife a Glock43 for Mother's Day (Momma bear has claws) and she has her concealed carry class tomorrow morning, so we decided it would be a good idea to spend the day sending rounds down range in preparation :tu: And since we would be out at our favorite shooting spot, we might as well bring along some extra fire power.

First up, the Marlin 336. I don't shoot this one much these days since I have a T/C Venture in .270Win for my deer and antelope hunting needs, but lever guns are so fun. I have a scope on my .30-30 still, but I have it on mounts that allow me to look underneath the scope and use the iron sights when needed.

I managed to sneak the new Glock43 away from Wife long enough to put 4 magazines through it :) This thing is a perfect pistol for my Wife. She was really concerned with how the weapon fits in her grip. She just wasn't sure she would find something that she felt was small enough for her to be really comfy with. But I knew a single-stack subcompact would be perfect for her. As soon as she opened it, she fell in love with it. And shooting it has only cemented that affection for it in her mind.

Now I need to get a Glock for my personal carry, but I want something a little bigger and with more capacity. Maybe a Glock29 :tu:

To keep it fun for the kids we brought along my son Silas's Red Rider BB gun and his F16 slingshot. Here he demonstrates his very own style of firing the RR

Both of my daughters got a chance to shoot the RR, as well. We forgot to get a pic of Leena Bell shooting it, but here I am helping Chloe out. She was so excited after she shot it :D

Here is Mrs. 934 getting ready to feel the bite of the mighty .30-30. We are working on her posture; she still wants to settle back instead of leaning into the rifle. She makes it work, though. That girl is a better shot than I am :tu:

We also brought along my Granddaddy's Remington Model 552 Speedmaster. He was the Sheriff of Randolph County, Alabama for many years back in the day. This rifle was confiscated from a crime scene, or something. After it was finished being used as evidence, I guess he called dibs on it to use on squirrels - he could make a killer squirrel stew :tu: Anyways, after he passed away several years ago, all of his firearms got divided up amongst the grand kids. That's how I got the model 552. This is a really awesome rifle because it will reliably shoot .22 short, .22 long, and .22 long rifle.

Additionally, we brought out the Crosman Phantom air rifle. We intended to shoot prairie dogs while we were out, but with the kids with us, that was never going to happen. I have really gotten addicted to shooting air rifles the past few years, for some reason. I am anxious to get a nice .25 caliber air rifle to use for serious rodent hunting. But until I do, the Phantom does the job just fine

End result - we had a lot of fun and we succeeded in cutting the target post in half :tu:

If it's silly looking and it works, should one laugh. Particularly when she's holding the rifle. :)

So, my two cents. If you are thinking the 29, you already probably know the problem with it- the price of 10mm and the lack of commercial variety.  I've shot several of 30s and 26s, and I still keep going back to my 19. I find that the length of the butt is too short unless I put in an extended magazine and then it's just as long in the butt as the 19 with fewer rounds. I carry the 19 daily IWB and people always expect it to print and it stubbornly refuses to do so unless I'm wearing tighter than average pants. If I really need to worry about concealment, I take the light off it and go with a less bulky holster than my usual.

We aren't super worried about her posture because, as you mention, it works for her :tu:

Until last summer, I would have agreed with you about the 10mm. And you're not wrong, variety is severely lacking compared to 9x19 and 45acp, and it is more expensive. But then my buddy got a 20. Since he is apparently incapable of doing his own research ;) I dove in to find the best ammo options for him. Turns out their is some decent variety in ammo performance. I'd really only need a light load (.40 S&W duplicate) to stop human bad guys and one of the stout offerings from Buffalo Bore or Double Tap to protect myself from furry, growling ursus or felines. And our local sporting goods stores stock a decent variety. It is more expensive than 9x19mm or 45acp, though. My wife's "practice" ammo was $25 for 150 rds.

Hmm more capacity for carry you say?

I would recommend a Block except CZ is more better.

I have been following that in the news. Very, very sad indeed.
