Thinking of walking away from Victorinox
on: July 19, 2016, 09:11:00 AM
Hey, y'all! New to this forum! I'm 50 years old and have always had a Swiss Army knife since I've been at least 10. I must have owned at least a dozen over the years, but recently had a situation that has made me completely rethink whether I want to jump ship from Victorinox.

I've recently been trying to go micro with all my tools and my wallet as well and have wanted to do this with my pocket knife too. It seemed like serendipity when the red plastic cover on my classic popped off, because now it was SO THIN! So, like the space miser I was, I popped off the other side, and proceeded to smooth out the bolts sticking out of the sides with my dremel tool and made it CRAZY SKINNY. All was going well one day until I decided to subject my knife to cutting through a bar of soap and, whammy, the whole thing fell apart. Other issues prior to this were that the general torque I was trying to get out of the classic was just too much for this thing to handle.

At the end of the day, my dilemma is: I don't see any mini-multi tool on the market (knife, scissors, flathead) that has nearly the same low profile as a Victorinox (the smallest Leatherman tools are still pretty bulky), yet I'm afraid that staying with another Victorinox Classic (even the skinnier Victorinox Classic SD, Silver Alox) won't be hardy enough for light duties outside of an office environment.

Thoughts?

That was a tough job for a Classic, but all other Vics (and most knives) would do it.
If you insist on a slim knife with a small blade, then a Spyderco Ladybug (or similar) will do the job.
A bigger blade will be more efficient though. Alox Solo, Spyderco Delika and Merkator K55K will do most tasks with ease.

could it also be that when you "smoothed out the bolts" you actually removed the peening that holds it together?

or did you just slim them down then add some peening?  also without the scales, the classic has almost no structural strength, and then the brass pins being shrunken to the bare minimum, it may have been one good use away from death
If I can help, let me know

Welcome to the forum :waving:

The reason it fell appart is you dremmeled away the very thing that was holding it together. The bolts you dremmeled away not only hold the scales on, they with help of the bushings keep the tool together and by even removing a little bit of the top of the bolts you loosen the hold the bushings have on the liners. If you want thin, the ALOX Classic will do the light jobs just fine.

Add a smaller SAK to your pocket, there's lots of nice ones out there. I'm adding a pioneer as a pocket companion for my surge I carry. Probably not needed but you never know.

Lots of nice alox victorinox out there, I'd look at them if you liked your old vic.  :pok:

First off Welcome to :MTO: but seriously tell me you didn't cut off the bushings by "smoothing" them down  Alox Classic is what you are looking for though

Those bolts that you smoothed out, were bolts. They were bolted on to hold the thing together.
Compromising the bolts compromised the integrity of the tool.

Anyway, there are a lot of variations of the classic, that have alox scales, and are thinner than the cellidor classic. Here is a Companion on a SwissChamp. The Companion is roughly half the thickness of the classic.

However, I do think you are asking too much, and may be disappointed.
I have a Signature (thicker than CLassic) and a Micra, and a #2 Philips bit, and a Nitecore Tube, and a NiteIze QuicKey on my keys, plus the keys themselves. Dangling them in my pocket makes the bulk disappear.

If just a Classic feels too thick to you, there are not too many alternatives.

Welcome to the forum and interesting story. Victorinox is one of the best in the game. I wouldn't travel far. Look into the Executive or the Compact. Both are really good knives. The Executive five you a little bit more to work with than the classic but isn't as bulky as the 91mm. The Compact (91mm) is as compact as they get they really do pack a bunch of features in this slim knife. Hope you find what your looking for. :tu:

Hello, and welcome! Basically everything I was going to say (dremmeling compromised integrity, recommend Alox Classic, finding your perfect EDC is half the fun of the forum etc), so I'll just add that perhaps you need a change in how you carry your tools? A good pocket dangler (I recommend the Nite Ize #00 S-biner, with one gate removed to hook the corner of your pocket) can make what was a bulky tool all but dissapear in your pocket.

A pocket dangler is a very good idea  I had no idea how good until I picked a few of them up and tried them out :o What a difference they make in just getting to you tool/knife much quicker and they feel better in your pocket as well because they stay in one spot and don't move around so much

As far as small pocket tools go, you can't get too much slimmer than the Vic classic, but as others have said Vic makes a few Alox variations that are indeed thinner and still strong contenders.  I carry a Vic Executive every day and I'm quite pleased with it.

yet I'm afraid that staying with another Victorinox Classic (even the skinnier Victorinox Classic SD, Silver Alox) won't be hardy enough for light duties outside of an office environment.

A Classic should last for many years if it is used within its design parameters.  And even if it breaks after 3 years, at $12 it cost less than a pizza to replace.

Turn that frown upside down.

A smooth alox classic is really small... and it kicks. I have used mine for many tasks it was not designed to (cutting cans open, opening bottles, prying) and it came out a winner. Of course you can break it, but that little thing is quite sturdy.

Thanks for all the great responses! I had to dremel the bolts/bushings or it was going to shred my pockets. Well, I did get some good years out of the thing. I'll go for the Alox for thinness and see if the metal housing adds some torque to it. With a new job and 4 more darned keys in my pocket I don't want to get that "custodian pocket syndrome" - feeling like I've got dozens of things weighing me down (no offense to custodians intended!).

I carry a Dragonfly 2, it's a nice knife very capable.

As far as durability goes, I would not stake my life on FRN... that is why I'm looking to get a G10 version.

Try to get a smooth alox model, they are even slimmer than the regular alox

Still have an old, smooth Alox but no scissors on it. Seems like they are not being sold on Swiss Army site.

No, they were only available as advertising models a few decades ago so eBay and used ones are your best bet at finding one. They are still very much usable and will cost you only a few bucks. :salute:

The spyderco Grasshopper is actually also a good candidate for a slim small knife that is very capable. (And not too expencive)
