Suggestions needed please!
on: July 28, 2016, 02:56:14 AM
I need suggestions for a multi-tool because I can’t find exactly what I want.  I don’t need small tools because I have a Victorinox Champ, but I need a plier multi-tool with these features:

Necessary:
Spring loaded needle-nose pliers
Serrated blade (not combi)
Medium to large size (heavy duty)
Locking tools

Preferably:
One-hand opening
Long bit driver with replaceable bits (like the Gerber MP-1)
Pry tool (like the Gerber MP-1)

Options include Leatherman OHT, Gerber MP-1, Evo & Suspension etc, but none of these have everything.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

I'd go with the OHT before any modern Gerber. I had kind of a lemon MP1, but my OHT is great. The only thing is that its tools are a little stubby, since they're cramming them in from both ends. Requiring spring loaded pliers really narrows your options, unfortunately. :-\

If you're willing to forgo spring loaded pliers and OHO, why not an MP600? I don't agree that modern Gerbers are bad. I'll put my 600's against all comers, they're absolute tanks. My 600's have been used HARD. A US Army issue one stays in my bag at almost all times. :tu:

No doubt, the MP600 is good to go! (I was actually going to suggest it except for the spring loaded need - it has a great bit extension kit.) By modern, I meant recent designs like the MP1, Suspension, etc. which I don't care for. I have a relatively recently produced MP600 which is just fine. I just consider it an older design.

Ah, gotcha. :tu: Actually one overlooked Gerber that is quite good is the Strata. Spring loaded, OHO, and can use either the Gerber or LM bit kit. Another tool I've used quite hard and never had an issue with. Combo blade though.....

Thanks for the thoughts so far.  Several models mentioned that I've looked into, but all require a compromise on what I want.  Any suggestions that actually cover what I'm after?  Don't wanna compromise if there is an option out there that has those features.

Go with the oht! The LM bit driver extender actually does work with it. Just put it on the small flathear diagonally and it fits better than it does even on the screwdrivers it was meant for! :tu:

Unfortunately spring loaded pliers is not looked on as much of an option here as non spring loaded pliers I am afraid

OHT and MP600 are two very good choices to me though  :tu:

Get MP1 it is the best Gerber MT ever made. My favorite. Much better than OHT, or any springloaded tool for that matter...

Welcome! It's quite hard to find a tool with all those features, but I'm gonna put here a weird, unusual and inexpensive recommendation.
The Ganzo G301. Not as good as my LM, SOG, Gerber or Vics, but has all you want and the advantage of being cheap, shipped anywhere in the world.

Might not be as heavy duty as the MP600, or the MP1, or the OHT, its implements might be smakller than average and the tool itself is bulky and has much wasted space, but ticks all your boxes except for the prying tool.

I'd recommend any of the suggestions above before the Ganzo, though, if you can forgo some of your pre-requisites

Great, options to at least look into. And why is it that spring loaded pliers seem to be viewed so dimly around here?

Generally speaking, internally-sprung pliers have a hollowed out part to accept the spring. This makes them weaker.

Additionally, sprung pliers are a gimmicks used by many cheapo brands to make them stand out more and seem special, even if the spring is horribly exposed.

Plus, as mentioned, they weaken the head, although whether it is enough to make a difference or not is open to interpretation.

And lastly, multitool pliers are designed to mimic standard pliers and most heavy duty pliers are not sprung.

Ok, so it looks like the closest option in a decent quality tool is the Gerber MP-1.  That would only sacrifice the OHO, which isn't too bit a deal.  Any negatives about the MP-1?

How do you use the bit kit? I fail to see that option on Strata's page: http://www.gerbergear.com/Activity/Everyday/Tools/strata_31-000334
Also, the blade is PE and not combo?  Maybe this is the new design?

I'd say that the bad thing is that you have to get the standard bits separately and the tool is usually pretty expensive in its own. Other than that it is a fantastic tool and every tool in it is good. Also it has no scissors, but usually those two blades are enough.

I love G10 handles on it, but some seem to dislike that material. I find it grippy enough even if you work in vaseline factory, then again without sheath G10 might tear up fabrics after a while, so careful if you just keep the tool in your pocket.

MP1 has some extra sideplay also on the handles, but that doesn't transfer on the plierhead. It has never been a problem with me.

This is good info, thanks.  Now the problem is I can't find anyone in Sydney who stocks the MP-1.

How risky is it to order one from the US?  I've read some reviews highlighting that some MP-1s have had quality issues and given they're so expensive I'm a little paranoid.

I did read through that thread, and it's a good summation (with good pics).

One thing I'm concerned about is the opening action of the MP-1.  I've seen a few butterfly-style multitools (even today, a Surge) that are difficult to close because one side is stiff.  It would really annoy me to have spent as much as an MP-1 costs, only to find it's not a smooth action and will frustrate me every time I use it.

The cheapest I've been able to find one in Aus is $160, and even then it's in another state so it would still be mail-order.  The risk worries me with that sort of investment.

I only have one pair of spring loaded plier based multitool. It's the wingman, and dosent check enough off your list. But the spring loaded pliers are usefull when I'm cutting wire, multiple lengths, or zip ties, or whatever you need to cut and recut immediately. I would be ok if a few more options were available with spring loaded pliers. Although you do get used to gripping a set of pliers in a way to open and close and open easily even without a spring... Maybe a higher end tool vs. the ones available.

Also I've used a wave that was so fluid and oiled that it flew open like a butterfly knife. Some stick more. It can make your job just that much quicker or easier too.

I had opportunity to play with a Ganzo the other day (as pictured above).  It felt pretty solid, I was surprised.  Given I'm looking long term I'm keen to get quality, even if it is expensive, and I don't need scissors so I'm thinking the MP-1 will suit me better.  Just worried about buying one unseen.

I'd say that folding/unfolding MP1 is smoother than on any Leatherman. Both sides feel equal. But its not butterfly like SOGs.
