These are all really great suggestions.
You're also helping me figure out which MTs and SAKs I want next.
 :climber: :multi:

I had been thinking I wanted a Farmer but the Huntsman has everything I would normally want plus the saw etc.
TRICKY!

Even the much hated hook on back can be used for pulling tent stakes.

Pliers on an MT are an awesome tool for that job. As well as for many others  ;)

You bet!

This is a tough choice, considering I prefer tool combos to one-tool-to-rule-them-all.

Torn between many of the options already mentioned I think I'd choose an Outrider (and a sharpening stone to go with it) because of blade size and toolset. Good luck figuring out what works best for you  :ahhh  :D

Thing is Megan,it's kind of a rule...you HAVE to own at least one Farmer.

Or else...

I brought my Surge when I went camping but it really just sat.  I see DaveCanterbury uses a BO ST300 or at least packs one.  I think next time out I'll pack a OG ST and try and make use of it.  I like having a Saw and Awl on my MT and my Farmer and Camper seem to fit the bill and now thinking about it more I sure love my Swisschamp.

I always take a decent sized MT.
The pliers (particularly ones with a cap crimper) are good for handling hot things.
I would pick from a Surge, ST300 or SwissTool, if there is walking involved I would go with a Wave, Rebar or Spirit.

My usual camping MT is a slightly modified fire safe Core.

You know the more I think about it I just might bring my Swisstool.  I have an extra that collects dust mostly so it wouldn't hurt to add it in my pack.  I do like the idea of not having to worry about it due to the high polish.  I may polish my OG ST as well to limit the rusting issues.  This was quite a helpful thread.

Last couple of times I've been camping (shooting trips out in the bush, not camping grounds) I have taken a selection of knives and tools but the one that ends up in my pocket is usually the current model soldier. I don't have a OHT but would probably have preferred it for the PE blade.
I was packing the Hercules but the extra weight was a slight annoyance and i rarely if ever used the pliers or scissors. Scissors are a must for me on urban EDC but a saw is better in the bush.

Hope I am not too late to give my 2 cents.  I think the gift will vary greatly depending on what 'type' of camping they'd like to do, each category below will also include the choices above.

Ultralight(Thru hikers): Classic, Cadet

Light Backpacking(maintaining a balance between weight and luxury): Farmer, Climber

Backpacking(won't mind trading in weight/speed for more luxury): Vic OHO Forester or Trekker

Car Camping: Any Pliers-based tool will work, my favorite is Vic Spirit which is I felt is geared towards woodwork(chisel, awl, saw)

 :D

Regarding alox SAKs there is always love for the farmer and it's nice but I like the Harvester even better.  I love the pruner blade for stuff like leather.  I've been losing weight and cutting down belts and making new holes with the awl.

I also like the marlinspike of the first mate.  Great for untying knots.

I may get Syph007 to make a custom alox with a pruner, awl, scissors, marlinspike, can opener, bottle opener et al.  Have all the good features of the farmer, harvester, and first mate in one.
PM me if you want one of my kidneys for your SOG TiNi multitool.

OK, both my kidneys.

My pots have a fancy new innovation called handles so no need to carry the extra weight of a plier-based tool.

And yes you do need a marlinspike/shackle opener.

I am sure the One Millionth Post Surge will make it on our camping trips this season.
I am quite sure that thing is heavy enough to bang in tent pegs.  :twak:

You've all offered so many suggestions. I am finding it hard to nail it down to one gift!
