Tapatalk, a memory hog
on: September 06, 2016, 08:04:16 PM
Although I mainly used the mobile theme after we made the switch to the new theme, I still had Tapatalk installed on my phone and used it occasionally for quick checks on what's going on. Till now, I just uninstalled it completely.  :salute:

I was using the old one from before the bad update that messed everything up and was generally happy with it, except it sometimes refused to load pictures in some threads, mainly the ones of bigger format. But that's not the reason I uninstalled it.

I noticed the internal memory of my phone getting quite full for no apparent reason. I keep all the pics, music, videos and documents on my external SD card. I don't have all that many apps installed, very few bigger ones and have moved a few to the SD too. What was eating my internal space then? Well, you guessed it, Crapatalk.

After a bit of detective work, checking every single app, the space they occupied, data they stored, I finally got to Tapatalk. The app itself used very little, 10-20MB at the most. But the stored data ...  :ahhh 1,7GB of data occupied by Tapatalk.

I thought at first to just delete the data, but as I only used it to visit MTO anyways, I decided to get rid of it all together. The mobile site serves me well enough as it is. :hatsoff:

So check your apps, check the data they store, maybe it's not your phone getting slow for no apparent reason, maybe it's just Crapatalk.

I had the old pro version for a while, but stopped using it completely, then with the new responsive theme there was no longer a reason to.

There is a pending update for the plugin here on the forum, which might be part of the problem (if they fixed it) but for the first time in ages it spits up a bunch of errors to upgrade/or uninstall... going to have to manually purge it. I did have to go in and manually block their popup garbage again as the toggle seems broken yet again  so perhaps that's part of it... I'll be glad to see the end of it...
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

I stopped using Tapatalk long ago, even before we had a mobile version of the forum.  It was great when I first started using it, but with each successive "update" it got more and more confusing to use as the bloat took over.  When it got to be too much I tossed it.

We had the mobile version for a while and that was great, but now the new responsive theme makes all other options obsolete if you ask me.

Yup, but I'm saying to not just stop using it, if someone likes it well enough, they're free to. But even if you stop using it but still keep it installed on your phone, check the app in the app management  to see how much data it has stored. As apparently there is, or was no cap to the size of the cache the app uses so it keeps storing, and storing, and storing, .... :ahhh

I hadn't had any memory issues from the app, sometimes my unread column disappears but I keep using betas and stuff.  Might be me at fault.

Of course we aren't telling people to stop using it... we are still supporting it after all!  :D

But to me, bogging my phone down would be another reason to kiss it goodbye if I hadn't already.

I the past I used Clean Master and CCleaner to wipe some of that excess garbage, lately I've been using App Cache Cleaner : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.infolife.cache

I find that installing, running and uninstalling helps more and is less annoying than the regular nagging to clean cache, as it's easy enough to reinstall when I feel it's needed (like after I've purged some apps)

I use CCleaner on all my android devices and my laptop, it's always been good
