What can you folks tell me about this knife?
on: September 05, 2016, 08:49:09 AM
Was my late father in law's knife from his tool pouch. Looks like it was used quite a bit.

Says Klein Tools from Chicago, all I know...

The outside blade says R1, the lock blade says R2.  The middle blade, well, I don't think it originally was so skinny!

Thank you for any info or insight!

I don't think it is that same knife guys. The blades just don't look like they were originally those shapes...

The only thing I can tell you is that "klein" means "small" in German. :)

If this knife did indeed start life looking like that 1550, then my father in law (an electrician...) definitely wore it out!  LOL

Quite sure it's more or less the same, or a similar iteration with some adjustments over time (the Vic Farmer from 1940s is a lot different than today's Farmer).

Here are two more vintage examples:

Could be. I have seen other Klein knives with the R-1 and R-2 reference and they were 2 blade electricians knives. But this one has that odd, third, middle blade...

Have a few of these but the single blade version. Work give them to us and they are blunt as all hell out of the packet.
Not a bad knife after a sharpen as you have unfortunately found the hard way.
Good for a back up knife I suppose?

Klein Tools had two different models of their 3 blade electrician's knife.I forget what the weird looking blade on the first one does but it has something to do with electrics. As I recall these were made by Camillus for Klein.

A romex cable splitter/stripper IIRC. I have a Klein with one.

Thanks for the info;it makes sense as there is a sharp edge just under the extended point.

I'm going to take a guess on this & base it on the idea that what's in Kleins catalog currently is different than what was offered years ago.
Sheepfoot, awl & screw driver stripper.
