Carrying the DoB,aka Duke if Blamington today...pic to follow

I wish Victorinox would offer this with a pointy blade, and also preferably an awl - a Compact Tinker would suite a lot of people, I think...

I've been known to walk around the house tightening these,  just for an excuse to use my SAK.

Day 6, my 15th anniversary to my beautiful wife.  Today,  she has my truck, and thus, my keys. And,  thus,  my GID Classic SD.
No worries,  I have this old one with a broken spring in my desk drawer as a back up. It's at least 10 years old.

Day 4:

I used my red Cadet several times at work today, but didn't want to look like a sap photographing myself doing so. So here's a glamour shot taken at the dog park.

Day 2:

When I went to spin the date forward on the quartz watches at the end of September I noted two in the box of languishing quartz watches had dead batteries. Since I don't wear them, and rarely wear any quartz watch, battery replacement went onto the back burner, until this challenge came along. The single layer 84mm Victorinox Watch Opener is a superb case back knife, rivaling the Bergeon and offerings from other professional grade watch tool companies. The case knife is used to remove a snap-on case back from a watch case. It was the most prevalent type of watch back for decades, especially for dress watches, until screw down backs with notches for a back wrench became more prevalent in the 1960's as they offered much better water resistance. Many inexpensive and a few expensive watches still have snap-on case backs. I have a 2007 Rado Original with a snap-on back which surprised me.

A good knife, once used a few times, will get a snap-on case back off with a simple twist of the wrist. No more gouging up a case back edge or the case itself with a jeweler's driver or damaging a pocket knife blade that's too thin with too fine an edge for the task. The blade is thick with a steep bevel down to a relatively dull edge that you couldn't cut yourself with even if you tried. The edge is fine enough to wedge it under a case back edge and pry the back off. Nearly all watch cases with snap-on backs have an small area around the back that with a thin gap between the case and back. Some are wider than others and some are more obvious than others. Look carefully using a magnifier around the case back edge. One of these had a nick for the case knife. The other is one of the rare ones that doesn't. Even so, a little pressure wedged the knife edge and a modest twist had it off. Got the battery numbers and can get them later today or Saturday. I have a back press which is similar to a small arbor press with various shapes of nylon dies to fit cases and backs. For the guys in the U.S., I got it dirt cheap at a local Harbor Freight. Much, much, much easier than trying to press one on by hand, which can crack crystals. DO NOT EVER use a mallet (or other tool) to try to hammer a back on! The extreme impulse (aka stratospheric G-forces) will knock hands off of their pinions, and glued on dial indices off dials. It won't get the back on no matter how hard you hammer it. Snap-on backs must be pressed on. The first time I used a back press I wondered why I had not bought one decades ago, after having been very frustrated repeatedly by a couple watches with very tight fitting snap-on backs.

First photo shows the knife engaged in the case nick for it; they're found in different locations; I've never found a common one. Second shows it with the back off. Third one has no nick for the knife; just had to wedge it in with a little force and start twisting gently a convenient spot. After a couple twists it got some purchase and snapped the back off. Not counting photo time, I had both backs off in under 30 seconds. One final caution: Be extremely careful about the quartz movement coil. The wire is much finer than even a red-head's hair. The slightest nick will break the coil wire necessitating replacing the entire movement if you want to salvage the watch. I've no clue why nearly all movements have this coil so prominently exposed.

I will have another posting showing battery replacement and back installation in a couple days.

Day 7:

Snap! This one is brand new, but is going to be a transformed into something more special soon, so I thought I'd carry it as is whilst I still can... Making plans for the weekend:

BTW think I got confused about the day number yesterday, should have been Day 6 for me, not 5! I have posted photos everyday, though (no repeat knives yet, think I've only got one more 1-2 layer option, though...)

It's been an interesting week. I have certainly missed having more layers but I love my SI so it's been good.

That's the first week in the books.
Today I used the large flat blade driver to unscrew the spring loaded cover on my Zippo so I could replace the flint.
