Day 18

Opened another of the awnings.  I hope we don't have any more storms this year.  Frankly, that awning was covering a lavatory window and venting the foul air was a more urgent concern than flying debris.

Well, I'm already visualizing a place for the prize. Just sayin' I'm hopeful since I don't have a multi layer SAK yet.

Here is my quick attempt if it helps !!

(sorry I found the idea so funny I had to try myself too)
The hardest task was to find a bamboo (I couldn't find wood of that color) floor pattern and pincushion it to get the approximative same vanishing point an lightning
Great work,  but I still like it on MY keychain...

Bummer! Been eons since I had a spring break on me. Have you changed/installed a spring before? Do you have a small spring for it?

This is the first spring I have had break.  It just broke yesterday :(
But,  the knife has been in my desk for ten years and is used daily.

Day 15:
(Attempting it ALL single layer!)

Another shot at using the Wenger combo opener to open a can, this time with the EvoGrip 64, in a comparison with yesterday's Victorinox Waiter.

Getting started puncturing the can is more difficult. As before, getting it to hook under the rim isn't as easy with the Victorinox, and I believe it has to do with the pointed shape combined with the Evolution scales, which are a little wider than the standard Wenger scales were when the tool was first designed. Once it has punctured the can, working it around the edge in many tiny steps works fine.

As it proceeds around the can, it is leaving what seems to be more gap between the lid and the can rim as it bends the edge the lid downward. It also wants to wander a millimeter or two from the rim, although it's not leaving a ragged cut on the can.

Getting around to the final part, it's not possible to cut through to where I started, but must fatigue and break the last couple millimeters by flopping the lid up an down. Like the Victorinox, the lid edge is not a work of art, but it's only going to get pitched into the recycle bin and the metal recycler doesn't care what it looks like.

The edge left inside the can isn't completely up against the rim, but it's a surprisingly very smooth cut pushed down almost against the can wall. Doesn't interfere with getting the food content out, but running a finger along it to see if it's sharp is discouraged (Medical Bill would pitch a fit). This shows where I fatigued the last bit of metal holding the can lid onto the can.

As before, it opens the can, and while the can lid isn't a nice clean circle of soft tin coated steel, the can itself is left with an OK edge. There is more learning curve for me in using the Wenger combo opener. I will give it another shot some time to experiment with tilting it very slightly inward or outward while working the cut around the can rim. I keep reminding myself the goal is getting to the can's contents efficiently without making a mess of the counter, not how beautiful the led and can rim are afterward.

As with the Victorinox Waiter, one won't starve during the Zombie Apocalypse with the Wenger EvoGrip 64.

John

DAY 19

I cut a band-aid into two finger-sized ones. I find it works better to buy just the regular size of band-aid. I can trim them down to make smaller ones, or double them up to make a larger one. One size can just about do it all if you get creative. I keep two in my wallet and it gives me all sorts of options.

I need to remember this one! I've never completely cut one in two, but have split the two adhesive ends down to the compress to improvise a knuckle bandage. I expect Medical Bill will have to weigh in on it (unless, of course, you paid him off beforehand).

Medical Bill says' Sometimes you find yourself in a situation where you don't have the luxury of using a whole plaster. Maybe 2 or 3 of your buddies have sliced a finger opening a takeaway coffee, or by playing 'Catch the SAK' in the field. If you only have a couple of plasters then A. stop 'Catch the SAK' NOW, otherwise, you're gonna have to improvise. Assess the wounds first. Assess your supplies and the amount of time left before you can resupply and take it from there. Remember, if you have run out of plasters and have to resort to tearing up clothes, the rule is, whoever loses at 'Catch the SAK' has to give up their trews first. It's the Rules.

Hope this helps. Stay Safe Kids.

Day 17

So I took some pictures yesterday of me using the Soldier to remove the old handlebar tape from my new (old) bike. They turned out to be impossible to publish, they were just so out of focus. And my burger and a beer for dinner turned into quite a few beers and no time to take any new pictures. So with this second miss I'll opt out of the drawing but I'll still post pictures. Here's the result of using the Soldier to open a can and a picture of my bike.

And next up is today's picture together with my latest addition to my EDC, a Thrunite T10t. I considered the Nitecore MT1a, a light with superior functionality but the T10t is more my style and it turned out to be on sale so I got it.
