A companion tool
on: September 18, 2008, 05:15:48 AM
This may have been discussed here before, but I am not sure how to search for it. Should anyone be aware of such a thread, please point me to it.

If there is not one, then I'd like to hear some opinions from the folks here regarding this idea that is rolling around in my head.. please give me a few lines to get this sorted out and making sense...

Almost every multi-tool (or SAK) has at least some tools in common with the other popular multis (or SAKs). In order to get a unique item on one that you might like to carry, you are forced to haul around a lot of redundant bits as well. Oh, sure.. 2 drop point blades can be nice, but does one need 2 large flat head drivers, 2 files, 2 wood saws, and 2 bottle openers?

If I wanted to carry a SAK for the corkscrew, along with my Surge, I'd now have lots of redundant tools. For EDC, this is really just dead weight.

Right now I carry a Surge, a 6" Craftsman adjustable wrench, and a Vaughan Mini Pry Bar. This gets me through most of what I need done.

My point is.. it sure would be nice to pick up a "companion multi-tool" to go along with my Surge. In my case, I'd really love to see a 6" adjustable wrench with a pry bar on the handle end and a corkscrew. Yes, this may be an odd combo, but these are things I would use. My Surge covers a lot of bases, having a companion tool that covers other bases without any tool redundancy would be truly excellent.

They could be "mated" to certain tools to compliment them and eliminate deficiencies. Or there could be a base "chassis" (a truly useful adjustable wrench would be my pick) that then is offered in "tradesman models" with specific tools to go along with a typical MT.

SAKs offer a lot of tools that never appear on a multi. There are a lot of ideas to mine there.

So does anyone have any thoughts here? Does anyone else carry some additional tools daily that could be easily combined into one new MT but without a blade, screw drivers, etc?

Check out some bike tools- I have four now, and most offer a selection of wrenches and allen keys that aren't found on regular mutis or SAKs.  The best part is, they are pretty cheap- each of the four I have ran $20 or less.  I'll post some pics soon.

Def - Where did you get the pocket clip for a VIC Spirit?
Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

I think Def gets asked about that clip everytime he posts a picture of it. Wish I could remember the answer...  :D

I am very interested in companion tools too, by the way. Hard to beat the utility of a small adjustable wrench for the size and price. I saw pictures of some adjustable wrenches once that had cutouts in the handles to help reduce the weight.

For size and weight, the Crunch is very good if you want locking pliers. And a 5" set of Irwins is a cheap, simple solution for a small toolbag.

You are, to a greater or lesser extent, always going go have an overabundance of Cap Lifters or Can openers, this cannae be halped.

I don't see an issue with 2-3 knife blades. Esp. if they are different styles.

I'm sure our local tame SAK modder has some input one way or another on making a SAK specifically as a complement to a multi and not stand-alone.

I just added the Squirt S4 (thanks to a Multitool.org giveaway) to compliment my Skeletool. I have the tools I use all the time at the ready for one handed opening (Skeletool).

Via the Squirt I've added a small file, good scissors, tweezers, a small ruler, Flat screwdrivers (I keep the Skeletool loaded with the Phillips). And another smaller blade.

Not a perfect set-up but they do work well together.

yes J-sews made it,
I have one made by him too. I know "awesome" is an overused word but it really does describe it.

when I first came here, Modifications were not as common. I'm sure many were "out-there" doing them, I
heard about them but never seen them, J-sews work was "FAB!" and I was amazed :ahhh

I've come at this from the other way round.  The tools I want are for the most part available on a SAK.  One of the few things I felt a SAK couldn't handle well was pliers.  So I carry a LM P4 to compliment whatever SAK I've got or if I need a bit more heft I carry a LM Mini (wherever its run off to  >:( ).  Its lack of much in the way of tools isn't a problem, the SAK covers that, the Mini's role is to be a pocketable pair of pliers.  That said I'd still like to find my ultimate pocket screwdriver.

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Re: A companion tool - a different idea

I too thought of a "companion" tool, but quite in a different direction: a small item, not much larger than a zipo lighter (although longer and not as wide, perhaps 2.5x1x0.5), with a sharpening stone and a ferro rod.

This would be a perfect "woods" companion for a SAK Farmer or OHT, something to touch up your blade as well as get a fire going. It would be somewhat disposable (both functions wear off in time), and to keep with the SAK spirit, size and price would have to be kept at bay. A minimalistic sheath for pocket carry protection (think thin leather), and that's about it. A cilindrical global shape would also do. If in "zippo" shape, one face could be medium grit, the other fine, and the ferro rod along one of the sides. KISS, though.
