I'm going to be brutal here with my advice (but it's for your own good).

There are a lot of people who bid at the last moment (it's called "sniping") for exactly that reason - it doesn't give other bidders a chance to respond because the auction ends at a pre-determined time.  eBay is not like regular auctions where the auctioneer keeps bidding going until no one else is willing to raise bids.  There are even programs (apps) that will bid at the last minute on your behalf ( I don't use one myself, but they are very popular).

But what you are admitting is that in this instance you were willing to pay more than what you bid.  My advice is that if you really want a particular item then you should actually bid the maximum amount you are willing to pay.  If that is more than anyone else bids then you will win it, if it is less then they will win.

Simple but brutal, and the choice is yours.

Thanks for the advice gregozedobe. I know what it is and what I should have done to prevent it. Sadly Ive gotten into the habit of not doing it just in case something else comes along or so i can decide whether or not it is really worth what I thought it was when I first saw it before I bid again. It hasn't bit me in the butt until now.. From now on I'll try to keep that in mind.
