Grandfather's mystery knife
on:
October 12, 2016, 11:25:20 PM
The knife pictured belonged to my grandfather (1911-1992). The only reason I have it is because I was a little thief growing up, I swiped this from a change dish when I was 10 or 11. This was not his edc pen knife by that point, I know that for certan. Good thing I grabbed it too, this is all I have from my grandparents.
My grandfather was a doctor (pathologist), County corner, served as a Captain in the Canadian Army Medical Corp in WW2.
The only marking left is a USA stamp, the other is almost completely gone.
The blades have been extremely worn and resharpened.
This is a model ID brainstorming thread due to most of the markings bieng worn away. Any thoughts or info are welcome.
I know these clasics were made by evreyone, so ID may be impossible.

Looks to me like it says "BUCK" above the USA

I noticed the markings seem clearer in the pics when zoomed in than they looked in real life by eye.
That does appear to be the Buck "B" above USA and the model no on the other side may be something along the lines of 33x?
Maybe

Was there a third blade, or are the springs fixed at the other end?

Springs are fixed. The other end is flush and smooth as it should be for a 2 blade.

From the BUCK USA stamp, it's looking like '67 to'72.

I played with the image a bit in an attempt to see it a little better. This is what I came up with, if you hold the screen just right..

It looks to be a serpentine jack pattern probably made by Camillus prior to WWII. The USA stamp usually indicates that it was a military issue knife. Camillus did make some knives for Sears Roebuck and Co that were stamped High Carbon Steel Made in USA on the tang but the letters were much smaller. I don't recall ever seeing that pattern as a military issue but I am far from being an expert on military stuff.

Good idea with the Camillus, might be
Camillus uses a 3 line tang stamp.

Found this on etsy, very similar. But not quite, some of the curves seem off.

As I said I dont really expect to ID it, this jusst seemed like an intresting excercize. So I would like to thank all who have helped.
