^^ A potatoe peeler? Ouch!!!

I think I will hand over one of the SAKs I have for my daughter. I can see her using the Woodsaw the most as kids love making forts in the bush...........as do adults. We just call it BushCrafting  :D

and give her the best instruction on usage as I can.

One like this, little me thought it would be a good idea to see what happens if I stuck my finger in the gap. It was okay until I tried to get my finger back!

As a grown up you would grab your multitool and open that thing up!

Or as an adult you don't put your finger in that thing in the first place

I had an amusing potato peeler related injury when I was a kid.  There actually wasn't a peeler involved, but I thought there was.... I won't go into it here, but if you want to read the whole story it's here in THIS THREAD

Back to the topic at hand though, if you have never accidentally cut yourself with a knife then you are either very skilled or very lucky.  Either way, I hope you continue that, because let's face it, no one ever wants to see someone else get hurt.

I'm with Grant, though I'd lean quite a bit toward the "very lucky" end of that spectrum.  I'm plenty skilled and I've accidentally bitten myself more than I can count.  Same goes for literally every knife user I know.  It's a hazard of using a sharp tool.

There's also the very careful alternative to consider but I'll confess to cutting myself a bit more frequently than I would prefer. Nothing to major yet though, touching wood. When I was into scale modelling my thumbs tended to be just a mesh of smaller cuts from clearing up casting flash etcetera.

Things Engraved (at least the one at Bayshore) has My First Victorinox on sale for $15.  I know it isn't a lock blade, but it's got no point on it, and it has a combo tool.

Otherwise I would definitely go for something like a Micra- it gives her a nice little knife, but also teaches her that a knife is just like any other tool.  It's useful when that's what you need, but no more valuable than any other tool.

One of the most important factors of having the pointless blade  is that it stops you from doing stupid things, one of my worst cuts was from using the blade instead of the awl...

It's a right of passage, and teaches you respect.

Are there any of us here that haven't been bit by a knife at one point or another?

Def

I think I've been cut by everything except for a knife. Disposable razors, tape measures, coke cans,  paper etc. but never a blade. I'm sure my time will come sooner or later.

Actually, I did get my finger stuck in a potato peeler once and cut myself on that, does that count?
Danielle.

I don't know it it "counts" or not, but it definitely doesn't sound like fun. :ahhh

I have started doing some knife and axe safety with my daughter as she has now joined the Scouts and, other than letting girls in, it's a pretty traditional group and do lots of outdoor camps.  Marvellous.  The group has a stock of Mora Basic Pro C for the kids to use, but I was thinking that I'd get her something a little different for her own use.

I'm looking at the Opinel Outdoor Junior in red (she likes red)

Thoughts?

That's a great looking knife.  I've never seen that one before.
