Alox finish changes and updates?

How durable is the finish on the Alox knives?  For example, for names and symbols applied to the back scale, can it be removed with paint thinner without damaging the rest of the finish?  Or, for a scale that is really worn, can they be refinished or even 'painted/anodized' a different color?

A lot of the knives (perhaps all of them today) I see have the 'engraving plate' already filled out.  That would be ok if my name and the advertisers were to the same but ...
