Hall of Shame
on: February 04, 2007, 03:14:00 PM
How about a hall of shame?  Post photos of broken tools, manufacturer errors, and just downright shameful engineering or design.

Note: If anyone post photos of the AutoTool, I will get angry!  ;)  Photos of the Sports Ratchet are fine though.  :P

The plain edge portion of this blade on a Bear Jaws Sportsman was never ground at the factory.

A sheath that must have been custom designed for Ronald McDonald.

Here's a photo of a broken Leatherman Charge bit holder that was posted on another forum.

Does this one qualify?  It's the unfinished, unground flathead screwdriver on my SideClip.  I originally thought it might be some kind of bit adaptor connector thing since it was second hand, and maybe the parts were lost.

Nope- it was just forgotten about!

Shave a little off of the sides and you'll have the first Side Clip with a Robertson driver!

That would be possible, but I'd rather have the screw up!

I've posted this picture before. It is the largest remnant of a Stanley Automatic Multitool, which literally disintegrated in my hand the first time I tried to use it. What a hunk of junk.

That's kind of funny.  I have one of those, and have used it a little bit with no problems :)

I don't still have the other pieces, or I could show you what happened. The first time I went to use the pliers, the one handle made from sheet metal simply buckled and distorted. The "channel" formed by the sheet metal bowed outwards on both sides far enough that it came loose from the main part of the tool. All of a sudden I had two seperate pieces of multitool in my hand. I wasn't squeezing very hard either.

I suppose we will never know, but......I wonder if that jaw broke from normal plier-ing activities, or if it was due to sideways prying, or some other non-recommended use?

This was a parting "gift" from one of my coworkers. As you can see the pliers head and the knife blade are broken but everything else is still functional so I was pretty happy with it. Being that this was before I became a tool/knife junkie I didn't know about Leatherman's warranty policy and apparently neither did my coworker as he had remarked that he probably would have just thrown the thing away and gotten another one if I didn't want it.

It actually ended up being a little over a year before I actually took the time to ask about Leatherman's warranty and wound up sending it in and recieving an entirely new unit. Top notch!

I don't know about the Squirt but the authors of the Charge and Juice photos claimed that the damage happened during normal use.  The broken Leatherman Charge, Juice, and Squirt look new otherwise so it doesn't look like they have seen much action.

Paladin makes their multi-tool sheaths from high grade oiled leather.  My bloodhound loves it.

This happened while I was in the shower and my pants (with the sheath attached) were on the floor.  I'm told that this is a perfect example of why I should use the laundry hamper.

Ah. The guy with the Charge would be me. Here's a link with the explanation: Link

Detail: I was adjusting the seatpost when the bit holder went off, just giving the screw a good solid seat.

I remember reading your post when that happened. It kinda spooked me, to the point where I went easy on my Charge bit driver so the same thing wouldn't happen to me.

But since then, I've gradually used the bit driver on screws with greater and greater torque, with no problems. Have you heard of many other people fragging their Charges?

It kinda threw me for a loop too when it happened. I've been using a Blast with the adapter since then with no problems. I keep pretty up to date on multi-tool interweb happenings and haven't seen anyone else report bit holder problems with any Leatherman that uses that item nor have I heard of any problems from the building repair crew at work after they switched to the New Wave. Maybe mine was just a fluke?

When you consider the amount of tool these companies make there are bound to be rogue units or components get through the QC net. The only way to find every fault is to test every tool and every component on that tool. At least the multi tool manufacturers do not put new stuff on the market so their customers will find the faults like some of the software companies do.

:o  WOW! Good point! That really puts it in perspective for me. (I've been having a particularly nasty problem with one bit of software lately.)
