This worries me
on: November 19, 2016, 01:50:13 PM
A while  ago  when using my Surge. I had to undo a screw. I used the medium screwdriver (not the bit) on the surge that had a perfect fit. And when I turned the screwdriver I immediately felt it.
The metal gave after to the force and got twisted. That really annoyed me. Surge is a chunky tool and the leverage quite good on the rather thin shaft but  I wasn´ t pulling that much.
I reached for  an old dedicated screwdriver and the screw came undone very easy.
It didn´ feld like I had overused it.
I left it at that but haven´t used the Surge since.... the propellerlike screwdriver really disturbs me.

Today against better knowing fiddeling with my new rebar I took it and tried to bend the screwdriver back. To my surprise it was easy using very light force.
Not completely but it looks better. My concern is i shouldnt bend that easy it feels like the steeel is far to soft and for worse it makes me hesitant to use my Lm tools for what they are made for.

Happened to me on my Core a few year back. Sent it to Letterman for a warranty claim just to see what they had to say. They ground the twisted part flat , and sent it back  :P

Wow.

I can see how that would shake your faith indeed.

I think I would go to the effort of sending it to Leatherman for repair/replacement, and I would keep it in mind when using the tool again.  Still, while it would shake my faith in it, I would still use it knowing that Leatherman will stand behind it if there's a problem again.

And I'd also make sure I had a back up just in case.

I have bent and broke real screwdrivers plenty over the years  Good brands included :D I have also bent a few of them back with a hammer ;) I would use it as needed and if it breaks know that LM will take care of it and even a few of the broken screwdrivers had warranties as well

They are tools and I use and try not to abuse them but a screwdriver is meant for well screws :D I know a person has to use common sense when using any tool but if it is my only choice then that is what I use

Hope you get many years of service out of it after this though :like:

Well, just make sure you have plenty of multis though  :D Anytime you send a tool in, not only you are without it for a few days, but also a few dollars come out of your pocket. Those will add up. I have at least two tools I want to send in, but I can live with the inconvenience at the moment. When they really pile up, then in a USPS flat-rate priority box to Oregon they go.  :D

That is interesting I would have thought that they changed that particular tool but it is discontinued so maybe that´s why and maybe easier  guess a scilled person could do that in a few seconds.

Yes thinking of that checked the distributers  here in Sweden and downloaded the form. Also found out that there is an extra fee of 50 :o euros if you want your same tool back if they send it to the states for repair. Thats not the case for me  but good to know. (better not break some of the discontinued Lm:s)

Totally agree with you but still was suprised how easy it was bent and:how easy I could bend it somewhat back !

I hear you, :D I have many(maybe to many) mt:s by now so I will manage without one for a while. Actually I have a few that I never came around to send in so I guess I will make grouppackage now.

Thanks everybody

 :-\

I've never seen a "real" screwdriver twisted by torque*...(I've seen a 1/2" square drive twisted by torque, but leverage was on my side that day  :P )

But...yes it does happen with multis (and screwdriver shaped objects), perhaps why LM moved (somewhat) to their bits, the hard steel is far less likely to twist.

Sent it back or don't - They'll replace it, but it's an older design, so I don't think the information on the fault will be news to them.

*at least, not one that was being used correctly in the right sized screw.

I have bent many LM screwdriver tips over the years, the stainless steel can not be just made as hard as carbon steel, they both have trade-offs for their intended purposes.  I usually tap 'em back into shape with a small brass or small ball-pein hammer.
