Archery thread!
on: September 24, 2008, 04:17:04 PM
I figured it's about time we had another archery thread as it's been a while since the last one :)

Now that I'm hopefully getting a half decent wage , I want to take up field archery again :), but the game's moved on a bit since last time I did it (in my teens) so I'm keen to learn all you folks have to offer :)

I really want a simple bow, (not compound as there illegal to use in field archery anyway) Flat or Recurve would be preferable, but I'm open to all types really :)

Also I'd like to have a takedown bow, as I still need to transport it to and from the archery grounds by Bicycle :)

Here's someone to make you all look bad :D

Not sure, look's about 14 to 16 to me , but that's a hell of a talent, not sure how useful it'd be in the real world :D, but damn impresive nonetheless :)

How much do you want to spend?

But as far as recurves go,  you can try something used. Takedown tend to cost more, but vintage recurves can be had for under $100, if you shop right. I got a few Pearsons and Herters that way.

If going for a new takedown recurve, the cost goes up. I'd avoid the Internatures and Samicks. Cheap, but cheaply built. You can get a better used recurve.

Do you want a metal riser or wood riser?  For a metal riser recurve at a great rpice, try looking at  Quinn's archery: http://www.tradtalk.com/ckshop.php?category=21

Quinn also does wood risers.

Thanks for that mate

Ideally I'd like to keep the budget under £100 but I'd be prepared to go as high as £150 if need's be. (may as well spend it while I'm still single and have money :D)

In think a 100 Euro is like $500 American. You should be golden.  :D

but seriously, A 62" Quinn comet would be $170, or about $116 Euro. Quinn makes real good limbs, and have a reputation for quality. If going the one-piece vintage recurve route, I'd go for a Pearson (used Bears are overvalued).

Not sure if quinn ships overseas, but their website is here: http://www.quinnsarchery.com/quinn's_archery_001.htm

Reading this thread got me interested in the English longbow and I have just read the article in Wikipedia. Highly recommended.

What struck me was the information that in many periods it was compulsory to own and practice with a longbow. The king then had a large force of expert bowmen for his wars.

What he also had was a well armed general population. This made revolt a lot easier and king and nobles had to tread a lot lighter on their subjects than other European monarchs. This in turn led Englishmen to assert their rights, giving rise to concepts absent in other countries. So it might well be that we owe our ideas of freedom and individual rights to the longbow.

If you are still looking for a bow you might want to try Cabelas.  They have a few traditional bows that are pretty cheap.  I have the PSE Coyote take down recurve.  It has a metal riser but it shoots well.  I am actually going to buy a Martin Savanah longbow when I scrape the cash together.  I miss shooting in archery tournaments.

Mikko, how many times could you pull a 250 lb. bow? I highly doubt more than five!

Want to make a bow? Google "paleoplanet".   ;)

PSE: Pull, Shoot, Explode.

I had a older PSE takedown (Raven) back in the early 1990s, and it was fine. Those were made by Jeffrey (USA). Since then, PSE has changed manufacturers to an Italian manufacture (Ragim, iirc) that has questionable quality. So I've heard, but I've no personal experience with the current PSE recurves.

If you're going cheap, then Samik/Internature would be a better choice. But I'm not too hot on those. But at under $200, your options are very limited.
