What did I get?
on: November 28, 2016, 05:19:14 PM
Someone was ebaying a "Victorinox pocketknife" with no further details and two fairly unhelpful photos:
I'm wondering if anyone is familiar enough with red 111mm SAKs to identify this just from these pics.
Anyway, I won this auction so I'll find out what it is in a few days time.

I think it's an Atlas.

Waiting for your final answer :)

I'm thinking it might be an Outrider?
Of course a Tradesman would be super-cool.

Looks to be farily thick, and has at least one inline screwdriver. Should be a nice tool, although thats a big risk you took with no pictures of what shape the tools are in!

I don't think that's an Outrider. Looks it contains short inline screwdriver. 111mm series can contains tolls in next combinations:
a) short inline screwdriver + pliers (Atlas)
b) long inline screwdriver + scissors (Outrider)
Or both of these combinations (Workchamp).

My only old-style-red 111mm is an Atlas which I like but never use... possibly because I am plotting to sell it and I want it to look good.

So anything other than an Atlas would be nice. But even another Atlas would be OK, I'd just sell one of them. (or give one away as an Xmas prezzy)

Two things in my favour - the item description had two words: "Top condition!" So if it's trashed, I can most likely return it.
Also the seller is female. At the risk of generalising, I suspect blokes are more sneaky when it comes to disguising faults with cruddy photos. The seller didn't know what kind of Vic it is, and probably didn't care - she just wanted to get rid of it with minimum fuss.

Ha ha. Probably selling her ex-boyfriend's or ex-husband's most prized possession, out of spite.  Either way, you get to benefit from her vindictiveness.  It sure looks like the Outrider to me. Here's me trying to take the same pictures.  You can see the nub from the inline Phillips, although, there may be that additional layer to it that we can't see.  For the price you got a bargain in any case.

That's a pretty good match Alan... Even the width looks right from that angle. For 25 bucks I won't say no to an Outrider.Though of course the drinks are on me if it's a Herc/Tradesman/Workchamp XL..!

So the mystery 111mm finally arrived.

It's big, it's filthy, but under the grime it's in great condition. Actually I think it's just a few months old; nothing is worn, everything snaps beautifully, and the blade, despite appearances, is almost factory sharp (There's glue or some crap on the end, giving it a knackered appearance. I'll clean it up...)
I got pliers and scissors...No file, so I guess it's a Hercules. Awesome!

AWESOME! I had an Atlas until I saw a Hercules for cheap, bought it and sold the Atlas...not as good of a deal as what you got though!

I still look out for cheaper WorkChamps though...working my way up.

I now have the same dilemma -  what to do with the Atlas. They are both big and chunky so I might as well go with the one with the scissors....

BTW now that it's clean the Hercules really looks like new. It's a mystery why the seller didn't clean it up a bit and open the blades  - she would have got a few more Euros for sure.

A few years ago I got a vic rescue tool, but one of the scales was slightly raised, so I attempted to put superglue under it, anyway, it ended up perma gluing the toothpick inside the tool, now I just keep it unholstered in my car. so I took the rescue tool holster and repurposed it as hercules holster, it fits really good, think you can buy one on amazon for about $12

As long as you didn't superglue all the rescue blades shut...!

Yeah, this thing is crying out for a case of some kind. The Rescue tool case is pretty cool looking - thanks for the suggestion!

the only difference using the rescue tool pouch is that the rescue tool sits in it with the scales facing front with vic log, and back with belt loop. the hercules due to its ginormous size is rotated 90 degrees so scales face the sides of holster. but the holster fits it like a glove

I had this Gerber pouch sitting around left over from a broken pliers MT, fits the Hercules great!. Actually a pretty decent pouch. It'll fit in any orientation.
