The Becker appreciation thread (pic heavy!)
on: November 30, 2016, 05:35:11 AM
Ethan Becker makes a great knife and is definitely one of my favorite if not my very favorite fixed blade designer. I know firsthand the kind of beating that his knives can take and will put them up against any other knife any day of the week! Here are a few shots of my small collection. Please feel free to post pictures of your collection or single knife or post about experiences/activities with Becker knives, which one you carried today, or even pick your favorite and tell us why. I know that there are at least a couple more Becker fans here on MTO! Lets see them! :tu:

Hmmmmm.. probably the 7. Its a good mid sized knife and can be used for almost anything. Plus I love clip points! It would be hard for me to let any of them go though.

Thank you!  :salute:

Yeah, wish I had gotten another. The first was like $49 but by the time I finally went back to Amazon they were in the $200 range.  If you like the big Camp Knife, the 15 is the perfect downsize....

Yep! I love the 5, but the problem is that all of its main purposes in my book would be served just as good if not better by just a little shorter blade. Also its awful in the sheath it came in. I may use it more if i find an inexpensive kydex or other type of sheath that actually fits the knife.

There's a Camillus made BK 1 Brute for $85.00 on a local sale and trade forum and the seller says it's in as new condition.  I'm very tight on my budget right now, but if this is something you Becker aficionados think is a good deal I can try to get it. This is the seller's picture...

This depends on if you are a collector or not.. it isa good deal price wise i think but I'm pretty sure the general consensus is that its not as effective as some other beckers and it gets its price tag because of rarity for collectors.. i may be wrong

So, is it worth the price and a 40 mile drive?  I don't know anything about these things so what I'm really asking for is a definite yay or nay before I try to contact the guy to even find out if he still has it.

If he does still have it should I try to get the price lowered to make up for the drive, or should I just jump on it for that price and giggle like a school girl as I drive away?

I appreciate your input.

It looks like on ebay new they have gone for 250-350. So yes it is a good price i think, but it never hurts to try to make a lower offer! However, it is comparable to a bk9,and you can find bk9s brand new between 85-100 dollars.. i think they are 95 on amazon currently. I havent ever handled a bk1 personally so I cant attest for its usefulness, but I know that there are some people who loved it and some who liked the bk9 much better. If/when you look at it I would ask to see under the scales just to be safe. It looks like the hardware is a little rusted which is no big deal but you dont want it underneath. I would say that if you like the fact of having a discontinued knife that everyone wants, go for it, but if you dont care about that and want a user, get a brand new bk9 or other model (i like the 7 a lot! Good mid range size)

The BK1 Brute. People seem to love it or hate it. Reprofiling is edge does it wonders I hear. The Camillus Beckers I have have a slightly thicker grind on the blade than the Kabar Beckers. That proably isnt a good way to decribe it but its readily apparent when they are in hand. Back to your question is 85.00 is a good price for one in the condition shown in the pic in my opinion yes. I've seen well used ones bring more. If you think you'll like it go for it. You know you need errrr want it.      :pok:     :D   If you do a search on the Becker Forum over at BF you can find lots of information to help you make a decision.     :)

Well........I for one would love to love it  ......BK1 that is

Things have changed a bit, but not very long ago a complete Becker collection was very high on my want list.

I was never a huge fan of the smaller Beckers, but a video I recently watched explaining the design philosophy behind each blade profile and type of grind gave me new appreciation.

I have a BK2 and BK9, and my small "issue" with these knives is I realised they deserve to be used, not collected.  :salute:
