Removing/thinning chrome plating on metal file???
on: December 01, 2016, 09:45:28 PM
I've seen the 4 variations of metal files, and have SAKs with all but the oldest variation.

Regarding version 3, chromium plated case hardening version with diagonal "termination" of grooves near the tip- I have some of these with a more gray/not shiny appearance and they cut MUCH better than the ones that appear shiny.

It's been written that the chrome plating reduces the bite of the file.

I'm wondering if there's a way to partially remove some of the plating to get more cut from the file. Would be nice to leave a little on there to prevent rust, and my "worn down" ones don't have rust on them so it seems the plating isn't gone completely...maybe it's possible?

Wire brush? Chemical solvent?

I dont want to smooth over any of the file "teeth", just remove some of the coating that is already smoothing them over.

That's what I was thinking too, something harder than chrome, softer than the hardened steel. I think I've got one of those brass wire wheels somewhere.
