first multitooler
on: September 27, 2008, 12:48:53 PM
just got my first multitool, a LM charge tti.
i'm loving it thus far, but its soo stiff, i cant even one hand open the main blade if i try my hardest.
i know it needs breaking in, i'm wondering what i can put on it to loosen it up
i have a friend who told me wd40 sucks and not to use it, he said use something called "liquid ____" i just cant remember the name.
just wondering if anyone has any tips for breaking a multitool in and loosening it up.

ps. if anyone is looking for a good site to order LM from: LINK RMOVED is awesome
was skeptical at first, but ordered around 3-4pm on wednesday and it arrived friday.

Hi Elitest - welcome to the forum!

I've heard a couple of people comment on how stiff their Charges have been when new, which hasn't been my experience at all, as I find they normally work very easily and smoothly straight out of the box. Those that have commented on stiffness have also stated that the blades will eventually wear in, so there's probably not too much to worry about.

What I'd say is, check that there's no obvious damage to the blades (bent, twisted etc) before forcing anything, but if you're happy that it's just "newness" - then try a bit of 3-in-1 PTFE lubricant. I agree with your friend about the WD40 - great stuff for releasing rusted components etc - but not a great lube.

When you've done that, put on a good DVD and watch it whilst opening and closing the blades continuously. By the end of the film - you'll be sorted :D

I used to come here a lot.

Wow! Good timing for this question. First off, welcome to the board. This is a great site. Last night I researched for hours about different brands of lubes. I want to keep my Cybertool 34 in top shape, along with my other folders. Best stuff out there is Eezox http://www.eezox.com/ It'll lubricate and protect against corrosion.  A lot of guys like Militec-1 http://www.militec-1.com/   I've used LPS #2 on many things, including my folders, but after reading up so much on Eezox I have some on order.

Welcome!  You picked the best multi for your first one! :D

I didn't have the same experience as you with my Charge, but I did with my Surge.  I use WD-40 all the time on my Leatherman's and it works fine.  You should have no problems with it or whatever you use.

DaveK was right.  Just keep opening and closing it while your watching TV or surfing the web.  It'll loosen right up!

Look into getting two 6 point security Torx bits and loosen the bolt that the blade is on.

I second the opening and closing of the tool while watching a movie.  Did the same with my Charge Ti and it's like butter now.

sorry eLM.com, didnt mean to step on anyones toes by commenting about them
but really wasnt the price i ordered for from them, they are out of NC, and i live in NC, so thats probably why i got it so fast.
they charge tax there so kinda evens out with other online retailers
was 123.50 shipped for charge tti and 42 piece bit kit

Guys - I'm not a moderator, but before one comes along and mops this up - permit me my 2 penneth....

@ rejadez23 - I don't think eLeatherman.com actually said you had been closed down, he just suggested that LM have been known to do that when people don't honour their MAPs. That's a pretty widely known fact tbh.

But speaking as a potential customer (to both), this ain't exactly good publicity....

Maybe use the PM system to beat each other up?

I'll shut up now.

I used to come here a lot.

Both of your prices are too high! :D

This is why I buy secondhand. :D

EDIT: And welcome to the forum! Great choice, though it's no Swisstool. Don't worry though, we'll convert you soon enough. ::)

There's no denying you make an effort....its just you're not up to the standard of hugability that Dave, Flash and other members of the UK meetup crew are :( :D
