Flexcut Pocket Jack
on: January 13, 2017, 01:24:41 PM
Anyone had any experience with these? I was basically looking for a multitool with a hook knife or scorp and found this. Seems expensive for what it is - anyone have any advice or similar tools to recommend? Thanks.

I've known a few people who expressed interest in getting one, but not actually anyone that had one.  I have read reviews of people that had cut themselves pretty badly with it, but whether that's a result of the design or their own carelessness I really can't say.  Either way, it is a carving knife, and I have never heard of a wood carver who didn't have some serious scars on his or her hands and fingers, so again, I am not certain that means much.

If you get one I would appreciate hearing some first hand thoughts on it though.

I considered getting one a few years back. Figured it was expensive, and saw a good deal on a Flexcut palm chisel set instead. I bought the chisel set, never used it, and was glad I didn't get the knife. As I recall there were two different types of knife available

I apologize, my comments above were in response to the Carvin' Jack Knife, not the Pocket Jack.

I know very little about the Carvin' Jack, and nothing at all about the Pocket Jack.

They've been around for quite a while now. I did look into them, some users experience trouble with the locking of the blades. No personal experience though. If you have the money for a Flexcut, you might be better off with three or four fixed wood carving knives.

This was largely my feeling as well, although to be honest, a folding version is somewhat more convenient than carrying fixed knives everywhere.

An interesting looking knife with some unusual blades. Tempted, but its a bit pricey for a collector piece that's not part of my main focus.

As an alternative to a set a fixed blades you might want to take a look at X-ACTO knives.

As a former model builder I have several X-ACTO sets, largely because I can never recall where I put them when I want them.  I would second that as a good choice any day of the week.

I've got one and it's a solid little knife. The fit and finish on the scales is a little lacking but all the tools are great. Out of the box it was by far the sharpest knife I've ever bough all the edges were perfectly mirror polished.
