Do you want to see more Leatherman accessories?
on: January 22, 2017, 06:27:15 PM
I for one like the bits.  I have also began to use the pocket clip wiggles and all.  I'd like to see them offer better leather sheaths like they used to.  Maybe offer Kydex?  I know some don't want to carry additional parts or have to attach fiddly pieces but I'm ok with that.

I also would like to see them bring back quality US made real leather sheaths like the originals. Deep carry pocket clip for the Skeletool would be awesome as well   :tu:

I would like to see the universal adapter make a come back, better sheaths more use out of the t shank adapter on the surge. Some sort of adapter for the tiny screwdriver bit for those of us that don't have that on on units. An official ratchet adapter but definitely better sheaths seems to be the biggest let down.

I mean, yea! They have a proprietary bit driver, but really don't take full advantage of it, IMHO. Yea, the bit kit is great, but it is basic. Chisel bits, awl bits, and for the love of God get rid of the micro driver and add a bit that holds the micro bits. Lots of possibilities, they just need to explore a little, ahem, bit more.

I would like to see other pieces to put into the Signal frame...

bit-storage
maybe a Ti-whistle
Instead of the file there could be a T&T holder.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

I'd like them to sell the bits individually so if you damage/break one you can replace just one without having to buy a new full set.

Also get rid of the spring thing for retention on the bit extender and make it magnetic, I've lost one of the spring rings without noticing until the next time I used it. It was a pain making a new one.

Some more accessories to make use of the T-shank holder on the surge would be nice.

I would really like to see Leatherman sell a "master kit" of some sort. A package that includes the pliers main body along with all of the option tools. Then the buyer can put it together with the tools that they want. I'm a truck mechanic and use the original one. Because every tool that has been made keeps coming with things they don't need or no longer have the ones they used to have. Mechanics don't need wood saws, scissors, bottle openers, more than one flat screwdriver, more than one knife blade but still use the file, small-tipped awl, needle-nose, one good knife blade, all while still being small enough to get into tight areas. I like the idea of the vise grip but would still like to fold it. There are other mechanics that need different tools, so they could make their own.

And they could make a different master kit for each tool body. It doesn't even have to be just Leatherman. Gerber, Sog, whoever. I think it would make a ton of money!

There was a manufacturer that did a lego type MT in the past but I cannot recall who .  I do recall it didn't go over very well.  It may have been timing but a re release might be a good idea.  I like the idea of the LEEP where the main blade can be removed.  I was thinking offering options for what else can be installed.

Although I do have the LM Cards plus the driver extension in my collection, I would never carry either.
The whole concept of the MT is speed. To start having to pull the card out and begin exchanging bits or extending drivers is for me just a PITA. I'd sooner carry a bag of proper tools.

This is exactly why I think the MT is stagnating. This whole silly idea that one tool or to be more precise the same tool layout in all their tools is the archils heel in today's MT's
Leatherman, SOG, Gerber all need to start producing tools that are task specific for different job criteria.

But NO, they simply churn out the same banal tool layout. I know a lot of people who would probably carry an MT if they really thought it would make their day easier, as it is I bet half of us never use 50% of the tool loadout. Not only a waste of money but also a massive wasted opportunity for the manufacturers.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

And at the same time the extremely job specific EOD versions are everywhere. Are there really more people working with C4 than wiring?

Seems like missed opportunities or laziness?  The Charge TTi for me is a missed opportunity.  This is where they could have charged ( no pun ) and offered more.  Oh wait they did charge more.  Ok back to what I was thinking, offer a different load out other than just blade and scales and gut hook.  As we all have said to those looking at the TTi vs the Wave,  get the Wave and save the money.  I'm sure they sell a good number of TTi's but missed opportunity.

I carried mine today and while its nice my modded Wave kicks its arse all day long.

Snap on ratchets would be nice... something similar to the tool adaptor but can be inserted into the bit driver...

Or an improved tool adaptor with built in ratchet...

Regarding the small eye glass screwdriver, I would like to see them make one with the shank that fits into the Surge, Wave, Charge, etc tool and eliminate the need for the the separate small screwdriver tool all together.

+ a million on better quality sheaths!!!

It would be good to have pocket clips available for each model they make like the ST300, Rebar, etc.

I guess that's why sheaths are included on the list of potential accessories since they should somewhat mitigate the risk of losing stuff.

I always hear about people loosing stuff.  I've not lost anything tho I did leave my Shard at a clients home.  When the space on the bit cart for the bits gets loose you can heat it up and press so the retention is very tight.  I posted somewhere on the forum about doing this.  Over time the card will become loose on the most used bits.  Never lost one tho.

Plus 1 on the leather sheaths of yesteryear.  And still looking for a reproduction of the original PST that I bought at L.L. Beans in Freeport Maine, over 35 years ago. :)

I would like to see bits and files/saws that fit into a universal driver... the whole tool could pretty much be based around it with a comfy handle.

Then you might want to look for something similar to the style of toolkit offered by e.g. Hoffritz.

I've seen those kits.  No surprise its been done before.  I think its how the tools are attached that makes this idea worthwhile .  Concept wise its a good idea.

Qualifying my following remarks, I own 4 old-school Leathermans, and a Surge. While I love the old school internal tool layout, the Surge is really growing on me. That being said:

No ill will towards anyone, here is my 2 cents:

I hate, I hate, I hate little bits that can be dropped in the woods or down a hole somewhere. Hate them like Capn' Hook hates Peter Pan. I would not want to see another stinking "bit driver" no matter how "versatile" it makes the tool. That's why the Super tool has so many screwdrivers. Nothing beats dedicated screw drivers. I use a screwdriver far more often than a knife as a tool. I don't want to carry a bunch of little bits with me, that's why I have a multi in the first place.

Gimme more PST-quality sheaths for every tool.

Someone mentioned to stop seeing the same tool load out on so many tools, well the Charge seems like a Surge with a hefty price tag. Understanding of course the different metals involved, but you are talking about $40 -$80 more for the same set of tools. Some Charge folks will chime in and let me know how much stronger they are. I truly don't know. Never had the opportunity to use one. Happy to be shown I'm wrong and be brought to school for a minute, but be sure there is a lesson worth $60...

Someone else mentioned industry specific tools...I wouldn't mind seeing something like an Ethernet cable end crimper and punch down tool on an E-tool or something. And it might not need a full blade, but would nee a clipped to work under and cut zip ties

I would not want to see truly specialized entire multis, but multis with a bent towards a job or industry like the e-tool I mentioned but for other job descriptions

I agree with you there, at least for camping/survival-type MTs.
So that's 4 cents now...
