Keychain MT with philips driver?
on: January 26, 2017, 11:13:36 AM
What's the general consensus on keychain MTs with phillips screwdrivers? I was thinking of getting a Style PS or a Gerber Dime (mostly due to price) but if there's another, similar, tool with the addition of a phillips driver I'd be keen to hear about it. I've seen stuff like the Gerber Vise but heard bad things about it so I'm not sure whether to give that a try. Also it seems like the Leatherman Micra doesn't have a "proper" phillips head. Is that right?  Do you have any suggestions?

THanks!

Do you really need the small pliers?  If no, just get a 58mm SAK like minichamp, rambler,  manager. They have a little decent magnetized Philip.

I can't talk about other keychain MT's as I have none but I can tell you a 58mm SAK like the Rambler can handle a wide range of (+) screws with its #1 Phillips and the flat screwdriver on the nail file. :)

Sorry, should have mentioned that I was looking for the pliers as well! Basically, small MT with pliers and phillips!

Can't complain about the Squirt... a bit heavy though... That's why I got me a Style PS

For their small size, I find they grip better than SAK pliers...

These are a good combo to the minichamp/rambler... Agree with everyone above, the Phillips on the 58mm SAKS are good...

Stick a Gerber Shard on your keys.  Shard + Style PS is a very good (and airline friendly) keychain combo.

Thanks for the information all. Speaking of the pliers, is the best I can hope for between £20-£40 going to be a Style PS? If so, I may grab one today. I have the phillips head on my SAK Hiker but I don't carry that everywhere (I avoid taking it to work)

Best keychain tool with pliers, probably yes but they're not without their faults.  They're pricey - though you can get them at Blacks/Millets for £28 at the moment.

That's what got me thinking about them - saw them reduced in Blacks last night.

I dont have a PS Style but I did carry aCS Style daily before I got my Pioneer X. The driver was quite effective from what I used it for. Being longer than the one on the squirt or Dime I found it very useful. If you need a larger Philips, I find the Shards driver very adequate.

the Dime is OKish, but the squirts are in a totally different league, and cost more.

only get the dime if you use the bottle opener a lot.

I've had Squirt P4 and PS4 for years.  Just got a Dime.  Pretty comparable.

$20 for a Dime, $30 for a squirt.  Can't really go wrong either way.

If you eliminate the key bar you will save weight and bulkiness.

Ahhh, here's the thing... it is heavy, that I will admit... But if I clip it to my side pockets, they weigh almost none. This is me though...

Didn't you use a key-bar? I thought that I read somewhere you missed it... :pok:

Thanks. Is the Squirt discontinued now? I have an Amazon voucher from Christmas and I just keep going back to look at the Dime...

Just saw that. Let me clarify what i mean. The dime is really, really bad, quality wise. There are several threads in this forum listing the issues with them, like falling apart, the pliers spring breaking etc, from when they were first introduced. They do not seem to have improved it since.
The squirt is a much more solid and reliable tool. I have used both. Yes the dime can be found for half the price of the Squirts, and it has a great bottle opener.
I would not advice anybody to buy a Dime. Buy it if you want -You may get lucky.

Someone kindly gifted me a Gerber dime a few years back which lasted a couple of weeks before the pliers broke at the pivot during some (very) light work.

I then bought a Squirt from Kirky which was an excellent purchase. I'd recommend spending a bit more on the Leatherman - really nice keychain tool.

I traded the Squirt because my name is Magentus and I'm a Tradeaholic.

I've always loved the looks of the Phillips on the LM Squirt E4.  You're compromising on the pliers more than a bit, but it depends on what you'd be using them for.  The fact it's discontinued might be a sticking point as well. :D

I'll be honest and say that I'm not much of a fan of the screwdriver/nail file on the Styles.  Too much flex in them to inspire much confidence IMO.
