I've also got a newer and older old style wave, I think the tab on the newer ones acts like a spring, there's a similar device on the rebar. My newer one with the tab doesn't have the rattle of the older one, they're both in unused condition. The photo shows the groves on the plier head legs on the newer one, the forked tab or spring fits into these grooves, gripping the plier head. You can just see the forked end poking out.

You can just see the forked end poking out.I think it's a spring that works so that as the handles open, the spring is forced apart effectively by the ramping action of the raised portions cast/forged(?) into the plier head.
