There is a show called the "The Last Alaskans" that follows some families that live like this.

We've been watching a show similar to that.  Megan is fascinated by the lifestyle and so we have watched all sorts of "life in Alaska" kinds of shows- everything from the Kilcher family on Alaska: The Last Frontier to a realtor show called Buying Alaska.

I like the idea of remote living, but mine usually centers around some place that is a heck of a lot warmer!

I have had and still do have the chance to go and live in remote areas, both very cold and very hot, with or without company.

It does get very boring after some time when the novelty wears off.
Remember, an hour long episode may condense a month's excitement/activities into that hour, making the lives of the participants/actors appear a lot more interesting that they really are.

A lot of these shows show people that are genuinely weird/antisocial/ill/know nothing better etc. but then you also see that they tend to have a lot of modern conveniences, modern equipment, people visiting them/communities AND seem to be more than happy to have cameras follow them around, which makes you wonder whether they actually are as alone or antisocial as they claim to be, whether they are just sad and seek any human company.

You also wonder if what they are doing is real or whether they just act for the camera, possibly even following a script to make them appear more interesting - if you are that isolated and hard to get to, then how does a full camera manage to come to you and follow you around (how tough is the road/path/snow, if a cameraman, carrying a camera etc. can follow you around).

Most seem to be self promoters, who love attention and money (which they claim to despise, but they DO get money for the show and many seem to be well-off) that just talk tough in front of the camera about what they will do to anybody that dares to come close to them or in their land, family values etc.....

I do watch some of them, e.g. Alaskan bush people, mountain men etc on the various cable channels, but consider them to be purely entertainment, rather than of  survival, educational, historical value.

Interesting!
Nice discussion.    I've seen a few episodes of said Alaskan corkscrews.  Seems real staged but, hey what ya gonna do?  I wanna go camping now.

And when the brown stuff gets rapidly distributed by the rotating blades you can bet all and sundry will be partaking of modern medical help quick smart.

After all, dying or being permanently disabled for the sake of making a TV show seem more "realistic" is just "real dumb".  The actual pioneers/original inhabitants of course didn't have a choice, they had to make do out of necessity.

It's funny you should say that DKS.  On the one we are currently watching there's one guy who said after high school he moved to Alaska and became a trapper because he enjoys the solitude.

I turned to Megan and said "I wonder how much he was bullied in high school?"

She responded with "probably a lot."

I was going to say this as well, it seems to at least be more real than the "Alaskan Bush People" show which is obviously them over-reacting for the cameras.

Better yet, start your own!  That seems to be the thing to do in Alaska these days!  :D

I'd watch it, and it would perhaps be the first Alaskan show I've enjoyed watching!   :P

Maybe, but there would be multitools and Swiss Army Knives, which, to me at least, would be much more entertaining!  :D

When I told Megan about your comment she responded "She needs to do an Alaska show!"

So there you have it- an audience of two already!  :D

Heck, that's about the amount of market research I did prior to starting MTO....  :ahhh
