JDR Pryrranha Review (Keychain thingy)
on: October 10, 2008, 09:34:26 PM

Earlier in the year, I won a GAC hosted by Joshua, which included several items…including this Pryrranha. Before I go any further, here are the basic specs:

-Crucible CPM-S30V steel
>about 1/8" thick and a tad over 2.5" long
-Bottle opener
-Two pry edges/flathead screwdrivers
-Most edges beveled
-Lanyard/keychain hole

MATERIAL/FINISH/DURABILITY

As said above, the Pryrranha is made from a 1/8” thick piece of Crucible S30V steel, known for its inherent toughness. To complement the S30V, the finish is a nice brushed satin silver. The stock finish resists scratches and rust fairly well, the ‘brushed’ effect masks most hairline scratches (something hand polished/rubbed finishes can’t do). However, due to the satin nature of the steel, when compared to a mirror finished piece, it does have a tendency to pick up rust easier…due to the ‘unsealed’ steel surface (many microscopic pits and divots). However, as long as you give it a good rub-down with something like Tuf-Cloth it should be rust free (mine obviously isn't...got too lazy ).

USEABILITY
The Pryrranha, as its name suggests, is meant to pry stuff. To fulfill this, there are a total of two prying edges…one right at the end and one across from the bottle opener. There is a slight angle on the top face (22 degrees?) that increases the leverage and decreases the force needed to pry out something. Aside from the prying, the Pryrranha can also function as a flathead screwdriver. For this, it has a total of three ‘heads’-one on each of the two pry bars, and a gigantic one alongside the edge of it. It does this role fairly well, although the slight angled top does make it difficult for the head to stay in the screw, as the other side is flat and tends to get ‘wedged’ out. Perhaps there should be a bevel on both the top and bottom?

THE BOTTLE CAP OPENER

Honestly, the Pryrranha would not be the first thing I’d grab when given a choice since (IMO) the bottle opener thingy needs a bit of improvement. It DOES work though, but obviously not as good as a dedicated one. Because there isn’t a lot of surface area, the flat portion of the opener mangles the cap instead of popping it off. Maybe make the next version a bit thicker…?

Pros

-Nice implementation of several gadgets in one
-Great construction and finish
-Top-notched design

Cons

-Bottle opener needs some work

Misc. notes
-Maybe a shinier finish to repel rust a little better?
-Loving the Mohawk on the dude

*Note...this was Joshua's first version...he has a newer, thicker one.

FINAL NOTES

Certainly the Pryrranha is worth the $50 price tag, as it’s handmade and combines several useful gadgets into one.

I always do enjoy a nice piece of machined metal. But for $50, I don't agree with you. For that amount of cash I'd rather get a SAK that does more. Yeah, it's a nifty little thing, but my interest level would surely fall flat within a day. Plus, it don't do "click" sounds like a well-made SAK (redundant, I know) can produce.  ;) Still, good luck with it.

My thoughts exactly! I've been thinking about a little pry-bar for my key-ring. That one's a contender, but I'm looking more in the $5 end of the market :D

I used to come here a lot.

Nice review! It seems nifty as a key chain but there is no way you're going to ever convince me that it's worth $50. I appreciate that it's hand made of fair steel, but damn, it's highway robbery at that price.

It reminds me of the Atwood Keyton I just got from Flash.  Another nifty little keyring tool that really isn't worth the money they go for (I know Nick won't be offended by that :) ).

As a very cheap alternative why not carry the opener from a broken SAK on your keyring.  I known its not in the same league but still, its very cheap :D

Dissing of tools aside, thanks for the review Brendan, it was very well done

Neil

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

It can handle:1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16 and 5/8 nut sizes! I am thinking about starting a collection of Atwood tools.

Although nothing like the quality of the Atwood, you could always try a Latshaw pocketwrench2 which has a similar concept.

I like the SAK opener idea, it appeals to my cheap streak.  ::)

Whilst this pry tool looks the business, $50 seems like a lot of cash.  Great review though.   :)

Thanks for the pointer. I do like the Atwood a lot more, but the Latshaw is more likely in my future...  :P :D

I've been wanting to try out that Vic opener thing since you first told us the story with the metal detector 'n all.

Too bad I don't have any broken SAKs.

Time to go admire some Swisstool pics, I'm sure one of those combo tools would be great.
