Who is "Out"?
on: October 12, 2008, 04:02:53 AM
I'm a closet Muti-collector  :-[

You can of course see the thing on my belt, and folk who know me know I can produce knives out of thin air, but I've never discussed how deep the sickness goes.

No one knows what I do in the secret places of my home, or the sites that dominate my favourites list.

Who is open about their disease?
Are you supported/rejected by family & loved ones for your shameful ways?

Who is like me and locks the doors, draws the curtains, and unplugs the phone so as not to be seen or interrupted whilst hunched over their precious hoard?

I am fairly open as I have my collection under the coffee table in the lounge room  ::). The wife tolerates but does not entirely understand ( she did buy my first MT, THE SURGE & got me a Juice Pro for fathers day), she does joke that she created a MTonster .Youngest son loves Leatherman eldest is a bit scared of knives, will buy him a SAK soon & I do like the knife less MT's that baby hawkchucker has. But I do feel a bit like a person with a closet addiction , but MULTITOOL.ORGhelps me feel almost normal , TBH though no one else really outside the forum understands.Mat

I'm open about it. Everyone I know knows that I'm the guy who ALWAYS has some kind of multi-tool or Swiss Army Knife on me. And when I get a new one I show it off to everyone I know who would be interested.

Most people I know are okay with it, but they don't understand why I need more than one. When I tell them I have 25 mt's, they just shake their head and walk away!  :D

You should see how pissed off my wife gets everytime I get an SAK/MT.
One day, while she was tearing me a new one I ACTUALLY said to her:"Fine!! have it your way!!  I'll stop collecting SAKs andn start keeping a mistress!!!" :pok:

She didn't even break stride in her a** ripping, or change her tune in any way, shape, form!!

That would be sweet revenge!!  Get a mistress that enjoys collecting SAKs/MTs more than I do!! :D >:D :pok:

Naa my multitool addiction is pretty well hidden :D

I'm surprised more people, especially guys, don't carry some kind of SAK or MT.  I see so many poking open packages with keys/pens/teeth...or "looking" for screwdrivers or pliers..

Really, when was the last time anyone here had to "look for" a Phillips driver? :multi:

I ''came clean'' with my addiction in August. Very liberating experience. Although my wife and co- workers already suspected.

I personally adhere to the "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy where my multitools are concerned. As I tend to coddle my MTs, I've found that people who don't carry MTs tend to want to borrow your MT to do things like pry open paint cans with your knife blade, hammer nails with your MT handles, remove wheel lug nuts with your scissors and so on...

I'd have a really difficult time trying to hide my collection form people, so I don't bother.

And if they can't see the fascination? It's their loss - meh.

I don't mind who knows. My best mate gets on my nerves sometimes he's a very non-knife person and sees anything sharp as a lethal slashing and stabbing weapon to be banned forthwith  ::)  Even my Micra  ???

Absolutely true story. This happened last week:

I have 3 multitools and about 4 SAKs - a very modest collection by most people's standards here. But still, I spend a lot of time reading about them, etc. and my wife definitely thinks I spend too much money and time on SAKs and multitools.

I regularly see a psychiatrist, mainly for depression. My last visit, I thought I should mention my SAK obsession to him and see what he has to say.

So I explain to my psychiatrist that I am really interested in Swiss Army knives but am worried that I may be spending too much time and money on them, etc.

My doctor pauses for a second, reaches into his pocket, pulls out a Vic Ranger and says, "Well, they are extremely useful to have. I use mine all the time. Do you like Victorinox or Wenger better? I prefer Victorinox - Wenger's quality doesn't seem quite as good." And then he reaches into a desk drawer and pulls out a Swiss Army pen and starts showing it off too.

We wound up talking about Swiss Army products for quite a while. I was actually the one who had to eventually change the subject.

Long story short, my doctor has a larger collection than me!  :P

Heck no, its a stupid thing to spend all of this money on.

I am completely ashamed and I am full of remorse.

I should really only have one Leatherman that I use for everything and I should have one folder that I carry on me all of the time-much like my grandfather only carrying one pocket knife for 20 years.

I would have so much money in the bank right now if I didnt recently buy all of these tools that I know that Im not gonna use and I definately dont need.

Wow!

We are focused arent we.

-Glad to see that the last three comments were about what I said.

And I stand by it. I must have spent nearly $700 in the last month (give or give a little either way) on Leathermans and Spydercos and Kershaws and Benchmades.
