Where are Leathermans made?
on: June 27, 2008, 09:43:12 AM
I've been thinking of purchasing a couple of Leatherman multitools but couldn't find a country of origin on the box. Are they made in the USA or are they made in china or somewhere else?

I've heard the plier heads are cast in Mexico, then sent up here to be finished.  Not sure though

Short answer; they are made in the USA.*

NeitherExtreme's thread.

Important Points:
Quote
A few facts I learned from the tour and talking to employees:
-ALL assembly of tools/knives happens in the Portland plant. I saw it happening, so no more worries about foreign assembly! (I have noticed that some accessories are made overseas.)
-Much of the steel they use comes from Michigan
-The plier head pieces are made in Mexico. When LM started with the vender, they were located state-side (Indiana?). When they moved their plant to Mexico, LM decided to stay with the original vender rather than find a new one.
-Much of the stamping/finishing/etc. happens at the plant. They also use a lot of local (Portland area) venders. My father-in-law knows one such vender, so it’s easy to believe.

I've heard the files are made in Austria but don't remember if that was ever verified and can't find a source either way.

*California says otherwise but by and large LTG tools are more American than any other brand.

My Leatherman Surge was made by Hattori Hanzo on the ice world Hoth. It was handed down through generations of Jedis as a backup to their lightsabers. Tim Leatherman (being a Jedi Knight) decided to make them for the masses a few years ago. I have the original though.

I have been hearing that the handles are made here, but the pliers and some other things are made in some of the european countries. Some sheaths are made in mexico and china, but thank God that not everything is made in China, like most gerber products.

My understanding is that only the raw castings for the pliers come from Mexico. The castings are delivered to Leatherman in Portland for machining, polishing, and joining of the two halves prior to assembling to the handles.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

I think the only link you are likely to find with that particular information would be www.multitool.org.

Everyone knows that it was the 6th level under the pentagon - pffft.

I used to come here a lot.
